Supplying the blade with a substantial 2.5hp is a STIGA ST 120 engine; a super-efficient, 123cc four-stroke air-cooled motor, which, thanks to its overhead-valve design, will prove cheap to run, clean burning and smooth and quiet in operation.

In addition to the traditional 'cut & collect' option, the Mountfield HP42 also offers a mulching mode - instead of being bagged, clippings are held under the deck and shredded, with the resulting mulch being forced back into the turf by a powerful airflow, where it will quickly rot and disappear.

The Mountfield HP42’s straightforward hand-push design and narrow, 41cm cut combine to make it highly manoeuvrable and therefore ideal for less substantial areas where there are obstacles and landscaping around which to work.

It’s supplied with a roomiest-in-class, 60-litre grassbag that’s made from breathable canvas to as to maximise catcher capacity; and it features ‘collector full’ indication, so it’s unlikely you’ll overfill and block the discharge chute.

In order to help you achieve your desired finish, Mountfield have furnished this model with six preset heights of cut (22 to 65mm) which, unusually for a mower in this price bracket, are selected using just a single lever.
