Hints & Tips
Many gardeners find a machinery manufacturer and stick to it for all their powered tools.
And one of those is Mountfield, a favourite for years, with a wide range of machinery including mowers, tractors, brush cutters and a good selection of chainsaws.
And if you’re considering giving the hedge another trim here’s a really popular cutter. While you probably have already given it a first trim it’s probably getting straggly now with new growth and the odd bramble shoots.
One of their most popular machines, the Mountfield MHJ2424 Double-Bladed Petrol Hedgetrimmer (61cm Blade), currently on special offer is just the job.
This is a strong little worker with a long guide bar and 28mm between the cutting teeth so you can tackle thicker, older stems as well as new growth.
A 24.5cc engine provides plenty of power and above all, the machine is well balanced making it less tiring to use. It weighs 5.5kg.
The rear handle has three positions so it is easy to cut hedge sides and tops.
It costs £149.95, is delivered free the next working day and has a one year warranty.
Now let’s have a look at a couple of brushcutters.
The Mountfield MT2801J Two-Stroke Grass Trimmer is ideal for lawns edges and has a bump-feed strimming line head.
With this feature you just bump the strimming head on the ground and more line is automatically fed out – no fiddling around and doing it by hand any more.
It has a 25.4cc engine and a 26mm drive shaft and as it weighs only 6.5kg it can be used for long periods in comfort.
The shaft can be split for easier transport in the boot of the car.
You can also buy a 40cm articulating hedgecutter attachment and a 25cm chainsaw pruner attachment to fit on to the strimmer, each costs £79.
And there are special prices on engine oil, fuel mixing bottle, replacement line and work gloves.
It costs £159, £20 off the recommended price and has a two year warranty and free next working day delivery.
The Mountfield MB2802 Two-Stroke Brushcutter has a mean blade for cutting though undergrowth like gorse and brambles as well as a strimming head for lawn edges.
The ‘chopper’ style handlebars make it easy to use in a sweeping motion, useful if you are cutting larger areas.
It weighs 8.1kg and a shoulder harness is also supplied to make it less tiring to use – it also has advanced anti-vibration technology.
With this machine you receive a free safety helmet with visor and ear muffs which normally costs £24.95.
And there are also special prices on a range of extras.
It costs £199, £40 of the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a two year warranty.
If you have a wood burner and want to prepare your own fuel, this chainsaw will do the trick.
Two-Stroke Petrol Chainsaw has a 35cm guide bar and has Mountfield’s own 37.2cc engine which has a pump primer to make it easy to start.
You can use this chainsaw for felling sham trees and cutting away branches.
And to keep it working efficiently there is a chain tensioning mechanism at the side. It also has a sprocket nose which eases the chain around the end of the guide bar and avoids excessive wear and tear.
It has a double-action chain brake as a safety feature.
It costs £149, £30 off the recommended price and there are special prices on a helmet with visor and ear muffs, chainsaw gloves, engine oil, fuel mixing bottle and a spare chain.
Now let’s have a look at mowers and start with a type becoming increasingly popular.
The Mountfield Princess 34LI Cordless Four-Wheel Rear-Roller Lawn Mower has the latest lithium-ion battery at its heart which can cut around 300 m2 on a single charge.
This is a rear roller mower which will lead a neatly-striped finish and has a polypropylene chassis for a long life.
It has cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm and a working width of 34cm. The grass box holds 35 litres.
The mower can also mulch the clippings and discharge them to the rear where you are cutting longer grass. It also has a grass combe to smooth the lawn before it is cut to give a neat finish.
It costs £269, £30 less than the price recommended and is delivered free the next working day with a two year warranty.
And once you have the battery and charger there is a range of great attachments which use the same technology.
For instance, the Mountfield MM-48LI Cordless Pole Pruner/Long-Reach Hedgetrimmer can cut both high hedges and prune overhanging branches.
And it is great value as you can use the battery and charger supplied with the mower.
It costs £139, has a one year warranty and free next working day delivery.
You can also buy a brushcutter, chainsaw, tiller and blower vac for £159 each and a hedge trimmer and grass trimmer for £79 each.
Now three great lawn mowers which have proved very popular this year as they offer great value for money.

Five cutting heights from 20mm to 70mm, a 550-litre grass box and a 45cm cutting width make this a perfect mower for a small to medium-sized lawn.
It costs £249, £100 off the recommended price, arrives the next working day delivered free and has a two year warranty.
And the final mower from Mountfield’s extensive range is the

Mountfield’s own 160cc one, the cutting heights are from 25mm to 90mm and the steel deck has a powder-coated finish to give it a long life. The grass box holds 60 litres.
It costs £319, £130 off the recommended price and has a three year warranty. We deliver it free the next working day.
The Mountfield 1530M Lawn Tractor has an 84cm cutting width and twin blades to give a smoother finish. This tractor is a very good collector or wet grass thanks to these two blades
