Hints & Tips
Neat stripes on a well-trimmed lawn make us think of tennis, strawberries and cream and straw hats, a typical summer’s day, the like of which we shall see this coming week if the weather people are correct.
We can’t do much about the strawberries and straw hats, or the weather come to that, but we can help when it comes to the striped lawn and here are a couple of cracking mowers from a well-regarded British company which will give you the desired finish.
The Hayter Spirit 41 Petrol Push Rear-Roller Lawnmower (Code: 617J) has a 41cm cutting width with an easy-starting 125cc Briggs & Stratton engine to power the blades.
The stripes come from a ribbed rear roller – and this feature also means you can mow right up to the lawn edges without fear it will fall into the flower when you get a bit too close.
It also has front fins on the cutting deck to smooth the grass before it is trimmed leading to a more even cut and a better appearance.
This mower will give you a very close-cropped finish – as low as 13mm – with seven height options.
Another useful feature is the cutter bar friction disc which will save the crank from serious and costly damage should you hit a solid object.
The chassis is of aluminium to give it a very long working life and the cutting deck is lined with plastic to resist corrosion and dampen the noise from the blade.
There is a collapsible grass box which holds 55 litres of cut grass and we deliver it FREE the next working day with a bottle of engine oil and a three-year warranty.
It costs £339, £60 off the recommended price.
‘Lovely bit of kit, well made with an excellent finish, very high quality,’ said a recent purchaser. Other reviews can be seen here.
This one, the New Hayter Harrier 41 Autodrive Variable-Speed Rear-Roller Lawnmower (Code: 375A) has been recently re-designed by Hayter.
It has a 190cc Briggs & Stratton, low on vibrations and emissions and mean on fuel and lets you cut grass at the speed you specify.
The cast aluminium cutter deck has a lifetime warranty and the two-piece polymer rear roller will give the striped finish which really sets off a garden.
It also has the company’s Vari-Pitch technology to increase the airflow under the cutting deck which in turn leads to better grass collection.
Being a rear roller mower you can cut right up to the lawn edges but a Trim Side means you can mow close to walls and fences.
Cutting heights are from 13mm to 65mm with seven settings and it has a 60-litre grass box.
The cutting deck also has Quick Wash hose fitting to take a garden hose and make cleaning it down at the end of the day a simple task.
This one is delivered FREE within two to three working days with FREE oil and a five-year warranty. It costs £649, £100 off the recommended price.
