Hints & Tips
Now’s the time to get out into the garden, the first major holiday of the year.
And after snow which crippled the country and left roads impassable and damaging winds which felled trees and caused chaos in the flower beds, we are celebrating the Easter period with ten unbeatable lawnmower deals.
Don’t be in too much of a hurry to trim the lawn really short, just take off enough to neaten it up and encourage new growth.
See the previous blog from my mate Drew for excellent advice on the first cut.
And there are a couple of other machines which you may need to give your garden a good start for Spring and Summer.
The first mower we have selected from our lawnmower web pages is this one, the Redback E137CQ-2Ah Cordless Lawnmower.
This is a smart mower using the latest battery technology, quiet when running and offering the same cutting performance as petrol power.
And it is a machine we helped to develop to tackle British lawns.
It uses 40V batteries and will charge fully in 70 minutes.
The cutting width is 37cm making it suitable for small to medium-sized lawns, say around 400m2.
Cutting heights are from 25mm to 70mm and it has a 40-litre grass box and on the handlebar, there is a display to show the charge level of the battery.
‘All in all a good product and run time is great,’ said a recent customer. Other reviews are here.
It costs £329, £50 off the recommended price and is delivered free within seven working days with a three-year warranty.
The price includes the battery and charger and the battery fits other equipment in the Redback range so you will only need to buy the device. This makes other equipment like hedge trimmers and lawn trimmers real bargains.
Battery-powered garden equipment is becoming more popular every year and this mower is a more powerful machine with a 56V 4Ah battery and a 49cm cutting width making it suitable for lawns up to 1000m2.
The EGO LM2001EKIT Power+ Cordless Lawnmower even has LED headlights to light your way when it gets dark.
It has been designed so you can collect the cut grass, mulch it or discharge it to the side – it has the power to cope with long grass with its 600W motor.
Cutting heights are from 25mm to 80mm.
One customer summed it up like this. ‘This lawnmower is better than we expected, it’s a solid lawnmower. It’s really quiet to use when we first used it we kept having to look behind us to check it was actually cutting the grass it felt too good to be true!’
It costs £499, £20 off the recommended price and has a five-year warranty with free next working day delivery.
The Racing 5073T 4-in-1 Hi-Wheel Self-Propelled Lawnmower has a 173cc engine with a large fuel tank and has the power to handle thicker areas of scrubby grass.
Cutting heights are from 20mm to 70mm with six settings and it has a cutting width of 50cm so it can handle larger areas, say around 1500m2.
The grass box holds 65 litres and as well as collecting the cut grass you can mulch it or discharge to the side or back.
The steel cutting deck has a wash port making it simple to clean at the end of the day – just attach a garden hose and briefly run the engine.
It also has a throttle control so you can increase the revs where needed.
With this mower, you also receive a protective cover and a spare blade.
It costs £279, £120 off the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a two-year warranty.
Now a special mower at a bargain price made to celebrate the maker’s 20th anniversary.
The Weibang 46SV Virtue Variable-Speed Petrol Lawnmower – Anniversary Edition has a 140cc 2.8hp engine, very fuel efficient, with a device to protect the crankshaft from serious damage.

Cutting heights are from 20mm to 70mm and the grass box holds 50 litres with an indicator to show when it is full and is suitable for lawns around 1200m2.
This mower costs £349, £100 less than the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a five-year domestic warranty.
Ever wondered how some people’s lawns always look verdant and healthy with vigorous growth?
Well, the answer could be that the lawns are regularly scarified, teasing out moss and weeds and dead grass to encourage new growth.
And this machine has been a best seller for some years as it is great value for money and very efficient.
The Einhell GC-SC 2240P Petrol Lawn Scarifier is from a leading German machinery company and has 10 steel blades which tease out all the debris to allow for new growth and let moisture work through to the roots.
These blades are driven by a 118cc engine and have adjustable working heights so you can be as gentle or sever as you like.
There is also a debris catcher but this is best left off if you have not scarified the lawn for some time. Rake up the rubbish instead – you-ll be surprised at how much there is.
The working width is 40 cm making it suitable for an area around 1000m2 – that’s about two tennis courts.
It costs £299.95, £200 off the recommended price and we deliver it free with three to five working days with a two-year warranty.
‘Excellent. Prompt delivery. Excellent product at a good price.’ That from a recent purchaser – other reviews are here.
Now a mower from a favourite British manufacturer which has been responsible for iconic British lawns for years
The Hayter Spirit 41 Petrol Autodrive Rear-Roller Lawnmower (Code: 619J) has a 41cm cutting width making it suitable for lawns around 500m2.
A really well-built mower it has cutting heights right down to 13mm and delivers a perfect finish partly due to small find at the front of the cutting deck which smooth the grass before it is trimmed.
This cutting deck is lined with ABS plastic to dampen the noise and resist corrosion so giving it a longer working life.
Powering it along is a 125cc Briggs & Stratton engine.
There is a 55-litre grass box
It costs £419, £80 of the recommended price and it has a three-year warranty with free delivery the next working day and a bottle of engine oil to get you started straight away.
‘The mower quality is very good and the materials used are high end as you would expect,’ said one customer. Other reviews are here.
The advantage of the Lawnflite 20SPR-ES Self-Propelled Petrol Rear-Roller Lawnmower with Electric Start is in the name – no tugging on a starter rope to get it going.
It is another mower with a rear roller to leave a striped finish – and this feature also allows you to mow right up to the lawn edges with fear it might topple into the flow beds.
A Lawnflite 173 engine provides the power and it has a 60-litre grass box with an indicator to show when it needs emptying.
There are seven cutting heights from 17mm to 75mm and with its 50cm cutting deck, it is suitable for lawns up to 1200m2.

This machine has a reverse gear so you can back out if it becomes ‘dug in’ and makes it easier to turn at the end of the row.

The Lawnflite 603 XT-S Lawn Tractor is a top-selling machine with a 420cc MTD ThorX engine started with a key and with a large fuel tank to keep you working for longer periods.
