Hints & Tips
Winter came in like a lamb and is now baring its lion’s teeth with trees felled, snow, even in low ground, and searches for the winter coat.
Trees and branches need to be cut and cleared and then they make excellent fuel for the fire.
For many domestic gardens a lightweight saw is all that is needed, as it can be tiring hefting professional petrol-powered ones around and these three listed below are the perfect answer.
They are light because they are battery powered but with all the oomph you need for small-scale felling and branch cutting and for producing manageable sized logs.
The first one is from an American company which produces a wide range of battery-powered gardening equipment.
The Greenworks 24v Cordless 25cm Chainsaw (2000007-A) will give you 50 cuts on a full charge and the battery can be re-charged for up to 2000 cycles.
It weighs only 3.6kg and is comfortable and safe to use with a hand guard at the front. It has a handy chain tensioner and automatic chain lubrication. The battery and wall charger are included.
It costs £129 and is delivered free the next working day with a two year warranty.
The Mountfield MC-48LI Cordless Chainsaw is from the company’s Freedom48 range with the same battery fitting several different machines.
The 48V motor gives less vibration and more torque and drives a 40cm chain bar and a translucent chain oil tank so you should never run out.
It is designed with inertia-activated chain brake, hand guard and quick release throttle making it safe to use and it weighs just 4kg.
With a 4Ah battery it will run for 50 minutes on a single charge and Mountfield says this is the equivalent to 150 cuts on 10cm logs.
It costs £159, £20 below the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a two year warranty. The battery and charger need to be purchased separately.
The EGO CS1400E Power+ Cordless Chainsaw (Tool Only) is one of the most powerful cordless chainsaws on the market powered by a 56V lithium-battery.
This will give you around 100 cuts on a 40-minute charge. With a top quality chain and chain bar it will give a chain speed of 6300 rpm.
The chain can be tensioned without reaching for the tool box courtesy of a side-mounted dial and, weighing in at 3.7kg, it is very light and comfortable to use.
The battery and charger need to be bought separately.
It costs £184.95, around £15 lower than the recommended price and it has a five year manufacturer’s warranty.
We deliver it free the next working day.
