Hints & Tips
With Spring fast approaching there will be some of you who welcome this season with nothing more than dread.
These are those who have large lawns and a good mower with a wide cut but secretly hanker after a ride-on or lawn tractor to make the job easier and quicker.
If you are thinking about buying one, have a good browse through these pages, they will give you a good idea.
And to help you further here are ten top mowers from three companies to give you an idea what is available.
One last point. When buying a lawn tractor or ride-on, bear in mind that they are useful for a host of gardening tasks like scarifying or clearing leaves and, combined with a trailer, are useful for carting fertilizers, logs or garden rubbish.
So work out what you might need in the future and make sure that these can be fitted to the machine you are buying.
So, back to the three manufacturers. Mountfield you will have heard of as manufacturers of top lawnmowers and they also have a range of excellent ride-ons and lawn tractors.
Their basic little ride-on is the Mountfield 827M Compact Lawn Rider, with four forward and one reverse gears and an electric key start. And with six cutting heights it is ideal for the lawn which is just too big for a conventional lawnmower.
Also you can buy a trailer hitch and a mulch kit. It costs £1199 and has a two year warranty.
The Mountfield T38M-SD is a great value for money machine where the main task is keeping orchards and paddocks neat and tidy. But it will also mulch when you want to cut formal lawns and has twin blades to give a powerful airflow under the cutting deck. Designed with lawns up to 8000 sq metres in mind it has a 98 cm cutting width and costs £1399.
The Mountfield 1530M Lawn Tractor has twin cutting blades and an 84 cm cutting width and has been designed to follow the contours of the lawn and has cutting heights from 25 mm to 80 mm and a grass box which will hold 240 litres and can be emptied without leaving the driving seat. It comes with a free tow bar worth £63 ,
free front bumper and mulch plug worth £105.
Currently on special offer it costs £1599.
The Mountfield 1636M Lawn Tractor has a 92 cm cutting deck, five forward and on reverse gears, and is suitable for gardens up to 8000 sq metres. It has a 260 litre grass box which beeps at you when it’s full.
This one has an extra-long five year warranty from Mountfield and costs £179.00, £200 less than the recommended price.
And a bigger machine from Mountfield, the 3000SH lawn tractor has a 389cc Honda engine giving much more power but with reduced exhaust emissions and vibration, making it more comfortable to use.
This has twin blades which give a powerful air stream through the cutting deck giving excellent collection of clippings even when it is wet.
It also has a deck wash facility, just attach a hosepipe and spin the blades. You can also buy a deflector kit if you want to cut longer grass – and a mulch plug and tow-bar are supplied free. It costs just £1999.
Now here are three from Lawnflite, a leading American manufacturer.
The Lawnflite RF125 Lawn and Garden Tractor has a 96cm cutting width but a very tight 46cm turning radius, making it easier to steer around trees and garden furniture.
It is also fitted with the company’s Shift-on-the-Go transmission and five cutting heights from 30mm to 95mm. The cutting deck is fitted with anti-scalp wheels to follow the contour of the lawn and leave a neater finish. It costs £1099 and has a two-year maker’s warranty.
The Lawnflite 703 RT Lawn Tractor has a reliable 13.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine and is an excellent collector of both wet and dry grass with a Fast Attach collector. It has Lawnflite’s unique 7-speed Transmatic drive transmission.
The Lawnflite 903 RT Lawn Tractor has a 105cm cutting width, making it suitable for really large lawns.
Again it has the company’s Transmatic drive, which acts much like the gears on an automatic car and is an excellent collector of both wet and dry grass. The grass box can be easily detached if you want to use the tractor with other equipment.
The 903 costs £1699 and is delivered free within two to three working days.
These next three are made by one of the World’s leading manufacturers of garden machinery and come from the U.S.A.
The Toro DH140 Rear-Collect Garden Tractor has twin cutting blades to blast clippings and even twigs into the 250 litre grass box. The cutting width is 92cm wide and is designed to follow precisely the contours of the lawn. This one has a 344c Briggs & Stratton engine and a rugged steel chassis as well as a hydrostatic transmission. It costs £1949 and the price includes a demonstration on handover.
If you are looking for a mulching mower with a really wide cutting width to handle both formal lawns, paddocks ad orchards, the Toro XLS-420T Recycler Lawn Tractor could be the one you are looking for. It has a 603cc kawasaki twin-cylinder engine, giving bags of power, and is a very sturdy machine, thanks to it’s heavy-duty steel frame. It costs £2250 and is delivered free within four or five working days or ordering. It comes with a three-year manufacturers guarantee.
The Toro DH220 Rear-Collect Garden Tractor is recommended for areas around 10,000 sq. metres and has a 102cm double bladed deck and 300 litre grass box. It is powered by a Briggs & Stratton twin-cylinder engine and has hydrostatic transmission.
It is an excellent collector of wet grass and will even pick up twigs and other debris on the lawn and will also mulch if you prefer to deal with the clippings that way. It costs £3399 and is delivered free within three to five working days and is demonstrated on delivery.
