Gardening ‘can dispel winter blues’

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has noted that there are many ways in which green-fingered enthusiasts are able to add some winter cheer to their garden.

Planting violas and pansies was cited as being a great example of this, as they are very colourful – and their displays can be placed wherever the individual chooses.

The importance of this is not to be underestimated, as celebrity gardener Rachel de Thame and mental health charity Mind launched a campaign at the end of last year, which was intended to raise awareness of how effective getting to work with garden equipment can be in terms of lifting the winter blues.

Curator at the RHS Garden Wisley Colin Crosbie said that violas and pansies are particularly effective when placed along the edges of borders.

"Planting them at this time means that there will be colour in the garden from now until spring when the plants, having settled in should be spectacular," the expert commented.
