In an article for The Sun News, Clemson master gardener Debbie Menchek noted that many gardens had randomly placed plants within carefully controlled spaces.
She suggested that this was in order to recreate the feel of wildflower meadows, which are characterised by colourful blooms.
As a result of this, the expert noted how important this made the use of carefully clipped hedges in order to create clearly defined boundaries.
"Clipped hedges, wild flowers and stonework gave most of the show gardens a strong sense of place along with a conservationist message," Ms Mencheck commented.
