Judges at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show have awarded the Best Show Garden award to an allotment. The triumphant Growing Tastes Allotment Garden was produced by the Winchester Growers and has scooped one of the most prestigious horticultural awards of the year.
The surprise decision marks a new direction for the society, according to Bob Sweet, head of shows at the RHS.
He told the Daily Telegraph: “I’m not aware that any other allotment has ever won the main show award – it’s a first and shows quite a change in direction.
“It just shows how the Hampton Court show has moved over the years. At one time we were full of thatched cottages and wonderful herbaceous borders.”
At this year’s show the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne is being marked with a Tudor theme to the event.
Six gardens have been designed which are representative of the character of his many wives.
