Strap in, we could be in for a bumpy ride.
The Met Office has forecast that the next week will be extremely windy, culminating in a strong storm on Christmas Day, reports the Daily Express.
Two large depressions, who are collectively known as Storm Emily, will set across the UK from tomorrow night, bringing gale-force southerly winds to Wales and western areas of England.
While temperatures will fall, it is not expected snow will widely cover lower ground, although forecasters did warn higher areas in Scotland will be blanketed by the white stuff as winter blizzards set in.
A Met Office report carried on the BBC website said:: "Severe gale force winds are likely to affect parts of Northern Ireland, central and northern Scotland on Wednesday night and early on Thursday; gusts may exceed 80 mph locally.
"The wind will lead to large waves with some coastal overtopping possible. In addition, persistent heavy rain will quickly clear from Scotland leaving squally wintry showers. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption."
Temperatures in recent days and weeks have been unseasonably warm and some gardeners have reported early fruiting raspberries – something of a rarity in December.
But Lee Brown, a forecaster for the Weather Channel, said this would not be the case for much longer and severe gales reaching 100 mph in higher climbs could sweep across southern areas of England in time for Christmas Day.
While we have been relatively lucky in avoiding a snowy winter thus far – with temperatures in some areas reaching the high teens – this will likely give way to a long, harsh cold snap that traditionally follows a mild December.
