New research has shown pottering around in the garden will make you live longer.
No we haven't gone mad. A Swedish study of 4,232 people suggested the risk of heart attacks and strokes were cut in people over the age of 65 that enjoyed tending to their lawn and plants.
The findings, which were published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, shows just how valuable it can be to spend some time outdoors, soaking up vitamin D from the sun and getting some fresh air, reports the BBC.
But the researchers from Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm said it was the exercise factor that prevented older people from becoming too sedentary in their golden years.
Dr Tim Chico, honorary consultant cardiologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said: "Although this study only examined people aged 60, it is reasonable to assume that the more active someone is throughout their life, the lower their risk of cardiovascular disease.
"The message I take from this study is simple. If you want to reduce your risk of heart disease, be more active. Don't sit down for long periods; get up on your feet and do something you enjoy that involves moving around."
While old wives tales would dictate that the smell of fresh grass and the wind in your hair increased life expectancy, few really thought this was the case.
But the Karolinska University Hospital research backs our call for more Britons to get out into their garden and tend to neglected lawns with our wide range of mowers.
The Greenworks G-MAX 45Li-40V Lithium-Ion 4-in-1 Cordless Lawnmower is becoming increasingly popular among lucky customers with large gardens.
One of the main benefits of this device is that it is completely cordless – removing the need to trail a pesky cable along with you around a garden, something we all get annoyed with when we're trimming our lawns.
Best of all is that we have a very special MowDIRECT only discount. While the G-Max has a RRP of £499, we offer it for just £279 (including VAT).
What a bargain!
