Gardening is ‘top pastime’ for older people

As it marks its upcoming Living Your Way campaign, Age UK has revealed that gardening is the most pleasurable activity in 38 per cent of over-65s' lives.

Some 3.8 million people in the age group said they love mowing their lawn and planting new flowers so much, that it is actually the highlight of their day. Us too!

Other top picks for older Britons include going on walks (28 per cent) and reading the newspaper (25 per cent).

These statistics have been released by Age UK to show that far from being a time of dread and fear, retirement can represent a golden era in peoples' lives, where they can do exactly what they want and when they want.

Over 85s, who you might forgive for wanting to take it a little easier, are no different and 26 per cent in this group said pottering around in the garden is the best part of their lives. Good on them we say!

Michelle Mitchell, charity director general of Age UK, said: "Having a positive attitude and being able to enjoy the little pleasures in life is really important for our wellbeing.

"Whether it’s enjoying being outdoors in the garden or listening to all that is on offer through the radio, we want to help people to stay independent for as long as possible so they can make the most out of later life."

Indeed, recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics' happiness index show that satisfaction among over-65s is rising in the UK, with over one in six commenting they love being able to say what they think without worrying about it!

Prunella Scales, who has become an icon for more active pensioners, argued that gardening is a great way to pass the time and said that one of her favourite hobbies is planting seeds and watching them grow to full-size.

But those who are a little less spritely on their legs might not really enjoy cutting acre after acre of land using a conventional mower.

For these people, a ride-on Snapper E3317523BVE is the perfect solution, especially due to its classical design that the more refined gardener is sure to enjoy.
