Electrically powered mowers are much lighter and cleaner than petrol ones but have the inconvenience of trailing cables.
But the latest ones from American company Greenworks have the power of petrol ones and without the cable problem.
The Greenworks G-MAX 40Li-40V Lithium-Ion 3-in-1 Cordless Lawn Mower (25157) is a top performing machine perfect for medium sized lawns, say up to 500 sq metres.
Cutting heights are easily adjusted from 20 to 70 mm and there is a mulch plug to give an option of dealing with the clippings. If you do collect, the grass box can hold 50 litres.
It costs £259 and has a four year warranty.
The company’s G-MAX 45Li-40V Lithium-Ion 4-in-1 Cordless Lawnmower (25297) has fours ways of dealing with the clippings – either discharged to the rear or side, mulched and returned to the lawn as a useful fertilizer or collected in the 50 litre grass box.
It costs £319 including battery and charger.
And the top of the Greenworks range is the G-MAX 50Li-40V Lithium-Ion 3-in-1 Twin-Force Cordless Lawnmower (25137).
With this mower even larger properties can now be dealt with by a battery-powered mower.
This machine has two 40 Volt batteries and has ingenious method of regulating the correct amount of power drawing more for longer and wet grass and less for straight smooth lawns.
A striping mat is included to give that traditional finish many people prefer.
The mower is made from polymer which gives great strength and will never rust.
The maker’s recommended price for this mower is £669 but we have it for sale for only £419.

And remember that once you have battery and charger you can buy other tools in the Greenworks range for very competitive prices.
