Maintaining an allotment or small garden could cut the risk of obesity among individuals of all ages, a new study has revealed.
Researchers from the University of Utah have revealed that those who regularly take the time to mow their lawn or potter around in their year usually weigh around a stone less than those who do not.
According to the study, green-fingered individuals are also more likely to eat healthy foods – for example through growing their own vegetables – as well as enjoying frequent exercise by making the most of the great outdoors.
Researchers studied a group of 198 gardening enthusiasts who shared community gardens in Salt Lake City.
They compared the body mass index – which is calculated by dividing a person's weight divided by the square of their height – against their neighbours in order to discover whether or not their favourite pastime made them healthier.
Commenting on the findings, professor Cathleen Zick – who led the study – said: "This initial study validates the idea that community gardens are a valuable neighbourhood asset that can promote healthier living.
"That could be of interest to urban planners, public health officials and others focused on designing new neighbourhoods and revitalising old ones."
