Trimmers ‘could be a big tool in 2013’

A fresh new year means a fresh new start for many people – and it is no different for gardening enthusiasts.

It is often taken to represent the perfect opportunity to reflect on the past 12 months and plan ahead. As a result of this, it can be worth spending some time thinking of the new trends that the future holds.

Stephen Lacey, a garden lecturer, broadcaster, plantsman and writer – whose books include The Startling Jungle, Scent in Your Garden and Real Gardening – told the Daily Telegraph some of the things he is looking forward to in 2013.

He said that one of the major new developments he would like to see is the rediscovery of shrubs.

"They have been booted into the shadows by the grasses and perennial movement and are now well overdue a revival," the expert commented.

Indeed, garden blogger Matthew Appleby added that this kind of trend will extend to a specific interest in and high demand for certain species.

Tree lilies were singled out as one plant that could enjoy this kind of surge in popularity.

"They reach six feet plus by the end of summer and are great for cutting," Mr Appleby remarked.

Any gardeners who are thinking of getting some of these kinds of plants in their own green spaces may wish to consider investing in some trimmers or brushcutters.

Here at MowDIRECT, we have a wide range of these tools, with something to suit all budgets and garden sizes. Click here to have a look for yourself.

This could certainly prove to be a popular garden tool throughout 2013, as gardener, writer and occasional presenter of the BBC's Gardener's World Sarah Raven told the Daily Telegraph her plans for the year.

"I want to plant more flowering shrubs and trees, low-maintenance elegant stuff that will give my garden good bones to develop and mature around," she commented.
