When gardeners aren't out on their patch with their hedge trimmers and leaf blowers, they can often be found at garden shows and popular public gardens looking for inspiration.
The number of top-quality public gardens in the UK is so huge that green-fingered enthusiasts are spoilt for choice and topping up your gardening ideas by visiting some of the best gardens in the country is undoubtedly the way forward.
So it is hardly surprising that Alnwick Garden, with its impeccable lawns and awe-inspiring topiary, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northumberland.
It is so popular, in fact, that some gardening experts believe it has put the county on the map.
An independent report has shown that Alnwick Garden has boosted the local economy by £150 million and has attracted an amazing 3.8 million visitors since it opened back in 2002.
Speaking to the BBC, Jane Northumberland, the Duchess of Northumberland, said: "[The garden has] certainly helped to put Northumberland on the map as a tourist destination."
However, she added that the garden was still very much a work in progress, stating: "I haven't finished what I set out to do. It has been a good start and I've still got a few more years to go until I finish."
And it seems that gardeners travel far and wide to take in the beautiful landscaping.
Some 59 per cent of attendees travelled to the garden from outside of the north-east.
You don't have to take your inspiration solely from incredible public gardens, however. Infact, at the last Chelsea Flower Show, Tomaz Bavdez, who created the Humko Garden at the event, took his inspiration from the William Burroughs book The Soft Machine.
He said he used the title as a metaphor for the human body and then translated this into a unique garden ecosystem.
