In these tough economic times, saving money is an important issue for many people. Gardening can be just one way that people can limit spending, with one writer suggesting that you can "save a small fortune" by growing your own vegetables in flower beds.
Kate Watson-Smyth, writing for the Independent, suggested that this year, people are "far more interested in seeing their your tomato plants are flowering or the carrots are coming up" than in traditional spring flowers.
Space should not be an issue, she notes, as it is often now possible to get special potato-filled grow bags or the likes of tomatoes that grow healthily in hanging baskets.
"There are no excuses, get yourself a trowel, or even an old spoon, a packet of seeds and a few flower pots … and away you grow," Ms Watson-Smyth added.
It has been reported that around a quarter of people with the ability are now growing their own fruit and vegetables, with sales of veg seeds shooting up by 128 per cent from last year.
