Three top mowers made with the professional gardener in mind

A few days of warmer weather have started the grass growing and professional gardeners will find their phones ringing with anxious home owners wanting their lawns cut.

A reliable and sturdy mower is absolutely essential, one designed for use several times a week on large lawns, solidly built with a powerful and reliable engine.

So here are three we believe fit the bill, chosen from our site for value for money and a long life.

The first is the Hayter Harrier 48 Pro Autodrive Rear-Roller Lawn Mower (Code: 496) with a Briggs & Stratton 190 cc engine with the company’s Ready Start technology.

Many home owners want tightly trimmed, striped lawns and this one has the essential rear roller, ribbed for great grip, and will cut down to 13 mm and up to 60 mm.

The cutting width is 48 cm – 19 in – and it is fitted with a friction disc to prevent accidental damage to the crankshaft. Indeed it has a lifetime guarantee against this bending.

An aluminium deck guards against corrosion and it is fitted with a front bumper to prevent impact damage.

The speed is set at 2.7 mph and it is comfortable to use over longer periods as it has an anti-vibration system.

It costs £788, over £200 less than Hayter’s recommended retail price and has a one year commercial use warranty. Delivery is free the next working day and there it is inspected before delivery and has one litre of engine oil included.

The Rover brand has long been a favourite with professionals and local authorities and the Rover 861M108 Self-Propelled Petrol Rotary Lawn Mower (Electric Start) has a substantial cutting width and can tackle all types of grass cutting challenges.

This has a 190 cc Briggs & Stratton engine with an electric start to get you working quickly. The engine has been designed for reliability and is cheap to run as it uses little fuel.

It is fitted with swing-back blades to absorb shocks should you hit anything solid and there are twelve cutting heights from 13 mm up to 60 mm.

The alloy chassis gives great strength and a long life and has a 15 year domestic use warranty.

The handlebar height can be adjusted to suit the height of the user, a very handy feature if you’re using it over a long period.

And there is an optional rear grass deflector available for £49 which is really handy when cutting larger areas of long grass.

It costs £849, over £100 less than Rover’s recommended retail price and has a two year warranty. Delivery is free within four to five working days.

And this one is from a top American manufacturer, the Lawnflite-Pro 553HWS-Pro Four-Wheel Lawn Mower.

This is very solidly built and has shaft-driven transmission to give much better drive than the conventional belt drive and better power to the wheels which is important for rougher ground.

The cutter deck is made of alloy to resist the rust and there are two forward speeds and fan assisted grass collection which will give excellent grass collection even when cutting wet grass.

A powerful Honda engine gives low vibration levels and it has a clutch for the blades so you won’t need to stop the engine when crossing paths.

The cutting width is 53 cm, 21 in, and it has a really large 75 litre grass box.

This mower costs £1149, £200 off the Lawnflite recommended retail price. Delivery is free within five to seven working days and there is a two year warranty.
