March ‘a time for mowing’

March is one of the most exciting times of the year for gardeners. The spring blooms are starting to emerge, with crocuses, snowdrops and even a few daffodils appearing. Trees are starting to sprout green leaves and the lengthening daylight hours and warmer weather make being outside more pleasant.

For those with lawns, now may be a good time to give them a mow. Grass is, of course, one of the hardiest and most adaptable plants on Earth, spread across the world and existing everywhere from the tropics to areas of sub-arctic tundra.

However, to make it look neat and tidy in your own back yard requires some attention and the Royal Horticultural Society has tipped March as a great month to get to work on it. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, the society has said this is a good time to lay new turf, before the weather starts to get really warm and dry. Anyone missing the chance to do so this month should wait until autumn.

It also said now is the time to start mowing, but people should not forget to raise the cutting height. After all, grass will not grow as fast now as it does when the long daylight hours of summer emerge.

Here at MowDIRECT, we have a wide selection of mowers to suit different gardens. For example, those with a smaller lawn and a liking for a traditional hand-guided mower could go for the Handy-Hand Cylinder Mower, which costs £47.50 including VAT.

It has a 30 cm width cut, which makes it easier to steer between obstacles than larger models. It also has a variable cutting height, so it can be set lower for mowing in summer than in March, as well as enabling styles to be varied. It has a grass catcher at the back, so there is less raking up to do afterwards.

For those with a larger lawn, one great option is the Bosch Rotak 40 Rotary Lawn Mower. This has a 1700w Powerdrive motor, offering serious oomph for a big job. This is ideal for a lawn that is half the size of a tennis court or larger.

With a cutting width of 40 cm and a 50 litre grass box, it will cut fast and wide without a lot of stops to empty it.
