Mulching ‘is a great way to protect from frost’

With the harsh winter conditions really starting to make their presence felt at this time of year, green-fingered enthusiasts up and down the country will want to adjust their gardening routine accordingly.

While it is clearly no longer the season to be getting the lawn mower out, there is still plenty of work to be getting on with.

For instance, many plants will need overwintering and special kinds of protection if they are to survive everything the climate can be expected to throw at them.

Mulching is a fantastic method – and it involves placing a fine layer of material over an area of soil around the roots of a plant.

This can help conserve moisture, as well as making a significant contribution to the fertility and health of the soil.

There are aesthetic benefits too – weed growth is likely to be reduced and the overall visual appeal of the area could be increased by making it generally tidier.

Here at MowDIRECT, we offer a wide range of chippers and shredders – many of which recycle garden waste and turn it into a valuable mulching substance.

Other methods can be used in tandem with mulching – and professional gardener Helen Yemm has claimed that cordyline is one example of a plant that needs different kinds of frost protection.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, she described these plants as being very fussy in terms of how they cope with colder conditions.

"You could either transfer your cordyline to a plastic pot (it may not like the root disturbance much) to overwinter it under cover, or I suggest you could take pot luck and simply protect it in situ as best you can," the expert commented.

"[Or] you can tie hessian or bubble wrap around the pot to prevent the soil from freezing," she continued.
