Gardeners ‘should not overlook composting’

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has advised green-fingered enthusiasts up and down the country to ensure that they do not pass up on the opportunity to transform useful garden waste into compost.

This substance could prove to be invaluable for the maintenance and care of plants in the coming weeks and months – particularly because the cooler climate is really setting in now.

Many varieties of plant life benefitted from lush growth over the summer, which means that there should now be heaps of grass and hedge cuttings.

If these are prepared properly, then they could be turned into the perfect base material for some very nutritious compost.

Here at MowDIRECT, we offer a wide range of chippers and shredders that are ideally suited to this purpose.

This is because many of these models are designed to recycle garden waste into compost or mulch – which is a similarly essential consideration.

The Einhell BG-RS 2540CB Silent Electric Shredder is a superior quality silent garden shredder – and it employs an advanced roller cutting unit which rapidly chops and shreds things like large branches into smaller, compostable pieces.

It takes a maximum of 40 mm diameter cuttings and is reduced from its RRP of £359.90 to just £179.95.

Bins are also useful, as they are able to retain some warmth and moisture, which makes it possible to create compost of a higher standard relatively quickly.

Chief horticultural adviser for the RHS Guy Barter underlined his belief that autumn is absolutely the best time of year to check compost heaps.

"Some gardeners will have just dumped their grass cuttings in a corner, which potentially will now be a smelly, slimy pile," the expert commented, adding: "But if mixed with the straw-like material produced in gardens at the end of summer these cuttings can become a useful soil conditioner next year."
