But this machine is also remarkably manoeuvrable making it perfect for a smaller garden with irregularly shaped flower and vegetable beds.

It has an 85 cm cutting width which can be extended to a 95 cm width for an extra £50.

This multiclip machine has a big brother with a 13.5 hp Mountfield engine which provides just a little more power when you have a larger or more uneven area to keep under control.
This front-cut machine is £2149 but again a larger cutting deck can be provided for just an extra £50.

Another ride-on mower that saves on collecting is the excellently priced Mountfield 1538H-SD. This tractor mower comes with side-discharge deck and in-built mulcher allowing you to mow lawns as well as tackle orchards and rougher grass. It has hydrostatic drive for ultimate manoeuvrability and is priced just £1399 – a £200 saving on the manufacturer’s price!
Although the grass hasn’t yet got into full growth it only needs a good soaking for a day and it will shoot into life and need to be clipped once a week if not more often.
The ash from Iceland may be blown over Britain because of the wind direction, but that’s not the direction from whence most of our rain originates.
