Chipperfield HCT270P 270cc Two-Wheel Tractor with Scythe Bar

There is a point where ground stops being a lawn. Paddock grass that has gone to seed, a bramble-edged orchard floor, an allotment that got away over the summer — put a rotary mower into any of it and you will spend the afternoon clearing the deck rather than cutting. The Chipperfield HCT270P is the machine for that ground, and it arrives with the scythe bar already fitted.

A scythe bar works nothing like a rotary blade. Two reciprocating cutter bars shear the stems at the base, in one clean pass, and simply lay the material down behind you. Nothing is chopped, nothing is thrown, and nothing needs collecting. That is why it keeps going through tall grass, thick weeds and dense vegetation long after a mower would have stalled — and why it leaves a paddock or a bank looking properly cut rather than shredded.

Driving it is a 270cc four-stroke RATO petrol engine putting out up to 6.5kW (9hp) at 3,600rpm. That is genuine ground-maintenance power, sized for smallholdings, paddocks, large gardens and professional grounds work rather than for a back lawn. The 5.9-litre tank means long stretches between refills, and recoil starting keeps things simple with nothing to charge or flatten.

One power unit, more than one job

The HCT270P drives its attachments through a PTO, so the machine you buy for cutting is also the machine you use for digging. Add the HCTC cultivator attachment and the same power unit turns over vegetable plots, beds and planting areas — one engine to service, one machine to store, two jobs covered. For anyone weighing up a separate brushcutter and rotavator, that is the argument in a sentence.

Built to be worked, not wrestled

A two-wheel tractor is only as good as its control, and this is where the specification earns its keep. The differential lets the drive wheels turn at different speeds, so headland turns and work across uneven or sloping ground take a nudge rather than a shove — the difference between finishing a paddock and being beaten by it. Three forward gears and two reverse let you match working speed to the attachment and the conditions, and reverse matters far more than people expect when you are backing out of a corner or off a bank.

The handlebars adjust through a range of -22° to 22°, so the machine can be set up to suit your height and the slope you are standing on instead of the other way round. Over a long session, that adjustment is what keeps the work comfortable.

Who it suits

Choose the HCT270P if you look after ground that a mower cannot honestly handle: a paddock or two, a smallholding, an orchard, a large plot with rough margins, or grounds you maintain for someone else. If you are cutting maintained lawn, a mower will do it faster and for far less. If you are cutting what the lawnmower has given up on — and would rather cultivate with the same machine come spring — this is the one.

Attachments for this machine

The scythe bar is included with this tractor. To take on soil preparation as well, add the HCTC cultivator attachment. A spare HCTS scythe bar is also available separately if you want a second, freshly sharpened bar to swap in mid-job.

Supplied with the scythe bar as standard and backed by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.
