Lawnmowers for small, medium and large lawns: Review of self-propelled four-wheel petrol lawnmowers

In this review we shall be looking specifically at petrol self-propelled four-wheel lawnmowers and covering which models are suitable for different size lawns. A quick point to begin with: what do we mean by a small or medium or large-sized lawn? After all, a medium to large sized garden in an urban area would probably be considered pretty small by rural standards. To avoid any initial confusion let us begin by defining lawn size areas. For the purpose of this review a small lawn is any area up to around half a tennis court or so in size whilst a medium sized lawn will be viewed as a lawn between around one half and 2 tennis courts in size. Large sized lawns are considered to be between 2-4 tennis courts in size.

If you have a small-size lawn your choice of product in this category of lawnmower is quite small. Your needs are more likely to be met by a petrol push lawnmower or even an electric lawnmower. If, however you are set on a petrol mower and wish to have self-propelled drive to save on pushing, there are a number of models available within our Self-Propelled Four Wheel Lawnmowers for Small Lawns category. Our most popular lawnmower in this categoy is the reasonably priced Oleo-Mac G44-TB. This lightweight quality steel deck lawnmower is simple to use and with only a 41cm (16″) cutting width it can reach into confined areas as well as being the perfect size for smaller lawns. There are also models available from Honda in our Lawnmowers for Small Lawns section including the entry level Honda Izy 41SP and a more expensive Honda premium range mower. The latter comes with Roto Stop which is a blade brake system that saves you restarting the engine each time you empty the grass bag – a nice feature but it does contribute to the extra few hundred pound you will need to invest in this mower on top of what you would pay for the Oleo-Mac or Honda Izy steel deck machines. If you are seeking something a little different you might try Toro lawnmowers for small lawns. These petrol lawnmowers offer 3-in-1 cutting options which are great for the varied weather conditions in the UK plus Toro’s unique Automatic Drive System which automatically propels the lawnmower at the speed you are walking.

If you are seeking a self-propelled four-wheel petrol lawnmower for a medium sized lawn you have a far greater choice of models to choose from. Favourites amongst our customers again include Oleo-Mac lawnmowers for medium lawns – people seem to appreciate the higher grade components and more robust designs these steel-deck lawnmowers offer – and also our top selling MTD low emission petrol lawnmowers for medium lawns. With greener issues and global warming ever more present in our minds, many people have taken the step of opting for a petrol lawnmower which emits fewer emissions. Other brands of self-propelled four wheel petrol lawnmowers to watch out for include our range of Al-Ko lawnmowers for medium lawns, particularly the new ‘High Wheeler’ and ‘Vario Steer’ models which include unique features you won’t find on other makes of lawnmower. We would particularly recommend Lawnflite-Pro as a brand if you are looking for the very best quality lawnmower available for a medium sized lawn. Lawnmowers for medium lawns are also available from well known brands such as Hayter, Honda and Mountfield.

If you have a large-sized lawn what’s the best self-propelled petrol lawnmower with four wheels? That’s a difficult question to answer as there are so many different lawnmower models available however here are a few you should definitely consider. If you’re looking for a good quality, reasonable priced steel deck petrol lawnmower which offers a degree of versatility we would very much recommend our best selling lawnmower for large lawns, the MTD 3-in-1 Petrol Lawnmower currently supplied with free mulch kit. If you require a good deal on a powerful but easy to manoeuvre lawnmower to maintain lawns, paddocks and orchards, try the Mowerland High Wheel Lawnmower, or, if you have a little more to spend and are looking for a step up in quality, check out the Al-Ko High-Wheeler lawnmowers with Honda engines which will offer similar performance. Our Victa lawnmowers for large lawns should be strongly considered if your large-sized garden contains steep slopes or you have a lot of bank work to undertake as they are driven by 2-stroke engines which will run at any angle. (You should avoid running normal 4-stroke lawnmowers on slopes much greater than 15-20 degrees as this can cause the engine to malfunction.) If you’re looking for premium quality lawnmowers to maintain large lawns or areas of rough and performance rather than price is your main consideration, you will want to check out the Lawnflite-Pro lawnmowers for large lawns or our Honda lawnmowers for large lawns (HRX models). Our Toro lawnmowers for large lawns section meanwhile lists this leading American manufacturer’s range of ‘recycler’ lawnmowers and we very much recommend these if your prime consideration is finding a mulching lawnmower to maintain a large sized lawn. Finally, we also feature lawnmowers for large-sized lawns from well known British brands such as Mountfield and Hayter and so if your looking for a more ‘home grown’ lawnmower these might be the choice for you.
