McCulloch Lawnmowers – three new lawnmower models for 2008!

These new lawnmowers from McCulloch have just been launched on the MowDIRECT site and they really do represent three very good buys. First there is a very competitively priced petrol rear roller lawnmower with self-propelled drive which comes in well below the £300 mark. Secondly from McCulloch there is a petrol lawnmower with electric key start – a feature that is becoming harder and harder to find on a lawnmower. And thirdly, for large lawns, there is an extremely powerful McCulloch high wheel lawnmower with 3-in-1 cutting ability. We’ll review each lawnmower in turn but before we do so some information about McCulloch itself.

Some of you may already be familiar with the brand. McCulloch began as far back as 1946 in America and became a leading supplier within the chainsaw market in both the United States and Europe. Their products established a strong reputation for being reliable and easy to use. These days the McCulloch lawnmowers available to us in Europe are manufactured in Italy by the Husqvarna group. Husqvarna are one of the top five garden machinery manufacturers in the world and their brands also include Flymo, Britain’s best known make of lawnmower.

Of the three new McCulloch lawnmowers available on MowDIRECT let us begin by reviewing the petrol rear roller model. As mentioned above, the McCulloch 46RSD Rear Roller Lawnmower comes with self-propelled drive to save on pushing. Currently priced just £274.95 it is we believe the lowest priced petrol rear roller lawnmower with power drive on the market and already looks set to become one our best sellers. The mower is equipped with a modern 500 series Briggs & Stratton 4hp engine for reliability and easy starts. It has five separate cutting heights between 20-70mm which although won’t provide you with the closest of cuts for this type of lawnmower it will produce a perfectly good striped finish which ought to satisfy all but the most committed of lawn traditionalists.

The second model in the range is the McCulloch 460SDE Petrol Lawnmower which is the perfect choice for anyone who has ever struggled starting up a petrol lawnmower with the pull rope. Equipped with an electric start, this lawnmower requires just the turn of a key for the engine to be fired up and ready to go. Given that you might be required to start a lawnmower engine perhaps 5-6 times during one cut – remember each time you empty the cuttings the engine has to be switched off for safety – this really does save on a lot of pulling. Another feature of note on this steel deck petrol lawnmower is the large-sized 6hp engine. Engine size is really important on a lawnmower not just because of the additional power a larger-sized engine offers but also the longer working life it will provide compared to a smaller-sized engine covering the same area of lawn.

Finally, the third lawnmower in the McCulloch range we have just launched is the McCulloch M7053D High Wheel Lawnmower. This large-sized lawnmower is perfect for achieving a fast cut on bigger sized lawns and offers fast turning as well as greater stability on more uneven ground. A great feature on this lawnmower is the 3-in-1 cutting ability. You have a choice between collecting the cuttings, mulching or discharging. This gives this mower real versatility and makes it a real winner if you have various grass types. On lawns areas where a neat and tidy appearance is required the lawnmower can be used in traditional collection mode. In the weeks leading up to and during the drier summer months you may benefit from switching to mulch mode to help your lawn maintain a green and healthy appearance. The lawnmower can also be used in mulch mode on rougher areas of lawn throughout the season producing a perfectly acceptable appearance. For banks, overgrown areas and paddock or orchard where appearance isn’t a concern, the McCulloch high wheeler lawnmower can be used in discharge mode to make the job of tackling longer grass easier.
