Should I buy a push or a self-propelled lawn mower?

This depends on a number of factors. How large is your lawn? How fit and healthy are you? Do you have a flat lawn or are there slopes and humps and bumps?

For a flat, or even medium sized, lawn and for someone who is happy and fit enough to walk and push, a walk-behind, manually propelled mower is fine. In fact, if you are up to walking and pushing, some push mowers with a decent cutting width are fine even with large lawns. This even includes some battery powered mowers.

Manual or push lawn mowers are easy to manoeuvre, give you exercise and move at your own speed. However they may be a bit much if you have a large, several large, lawns to cut.

Self-Propelled mowers really come into their own with very large lawns and properties and areas of grass where there are slopes to deal with, usually negotiating inclines of up to 30 degrees with less effort.

There are occasionally worries about self-propelled mowers and we sometimes deal with customers who fear the power driven mower will have a ‘life of its own’ and ‘take-off’ leaving them out of control.

We can reassure you that that ‘comic book’ idea of a mower taking off and dragging you down the road can’t happen. The drive is under your control. You engage it when you want it and you can turn it off to help manoeuvring the mower, when turning it for example.

You can even get self-propelled lawn mowers that adjust to your walking pace.
