The dos and don’ts of chainsaw use
Do always stand to one side of the branch or log you are cutting.
Do bear in mind that if there is a chain problem and it breaks or comes loose, it will probably whip straight back so NEVER be in line with the chain and make sure no one else is in line with it. Again, stand to the side of your cutting action.
Do power down, or de-throttle, the second you have finished cutting.
Don’t ever move from cutting area to area with the chain in cutting mode.
Do always transport your chainsaw in a case if possible, but at the very least with a guard on the chain and bar.
Do use a sawhorse when cutting large logs, if possible. It will keep the logs secure and enable you to focus fully on your chainsaw operation.
Do make sure that whatever you are cutting is not going to fall on you or roll on you when it is done. Make sure the log or branch you are cutting is stable and don’t ever cut up hill, a rolling log can do serious damage.
Don’t start felling a tree until you have a safe and clear working area, secure footing, and…
Do always make sure you have planned an escape route from your falling tree.
Do keep a tip guard on your saw during use whenever possible. This will help prevent kickback.
Don’t ever run while carrying a chainsaw.
Do try to avoid cutting with the blade tip, this will also help avoid kickback.
Do try cut below shoulder height wherever possible. This will keep a chainsaw away from your face in the event of kickback.
