When should I scarify my lawn?

In general a lawn will definitely benefit from being lightly scarified in the later part of spring and more heavily in the late summer, early autumn.

Light scarifying in the spring – from about the middle of April to June

Deeper, more aggressive  scarifying in the late summer early autumn – from about late August to early September or even early October depending on weather conditions.

It is important not to start too early in the spring, as you can damage your lawn by scarifying too early, when it is frosty and the grass is not yet strong enough.

Like aerating, think about ground conditions before you start scarifying. There is no point scarifying in a torrential rainstorm, you will just churn up the grass and make it worse. Similarly, if you try it during a hot, dry spell or a frost, you won’t penetrate the ground.
