Mains Electric Powered Lawn Mowers

Your smart new electric lawn mower will be arriving soon and we are anxious that you get the best performance out of it from the first time you plug it in.

Bearing that in mind, we have decided to send you some handy tips and advice, based on the kinds of questions we are regularly asked by new electric mower users.

Naturally, an electric mower is a relatively low maintenance item. However, our aim is to ensure that you get smooth and efficient mowing from your new purchase and that you feel confident every time you switch it on. We hope you will find these tips useful.

1. Assembly: Your new mower will arrive ‘boxed’ and there is a minimal element of assembly. This is usually limited to attaching the ‘Handlebars’ and ‘Grass catcher’ .

2. Preparation: Before you start mowing, check your lawn is clear of obstacles. Children’s toys, large sticks and similar. You would be amazed how many calls we get regarding a mower that has given up half-way across the lawn only to find out it was caused by an old dinky car lurking in the long grass!

3. Starting: If you are have difficulty starting your machine, it is always advisable to check the following:

• Check your plug and socket to see if the cable is secure. Make sure it has not come loose, or been yanked out so your kids can charge the tablet. Also, make sure the cable is not kinked and has not become tangled or caught on foliage before you start.
• Ensure you are holding in the ‘OPC Bar’ (Operator Presence Control). If you are not holding this in you will be unable to pull out the recoil.
• If you have purchased a hover mower, make sure you tilt it slightly back on starting, allowing the the air to circulate under the cutting deck and give it lift.

4. Storage: Make sure you store your electric mower in a dry place, covered if possible. Always give it a wipe over before storage and never store the mower away with grass or mud left on it (see below)

5. Performance: If you are having trouble collecting grass or you think the mower is not cutting properly, here are some things to consider.

• Don’t try to cut very wet grass that as this will result in clogging and poor performance
  If you have purchased a hover mower, don’t forget that a percentage of clippings, the finer ones, are recycled onto the lawn and that, due to air flow, some clippings wil be blown away from the mower.
• If you have a hover with a collecting box, you should walk inas traight line for the best collection.
• If your mower cuts out and you are using an extension chord, check that it the extension is rated high enough for your lawnmower
• Check the cutting height is set correctly. If you are having trouble with the cutting and the mower feels sluggish, this could well be the problem.

6. Grass and Mud: Wet and rotting grass causes metal components to rust and grass and dirt in or around the blades can cause all sorts of problems. Always make sure you clean the cutting deck regularly and thoroughly.

If your mower does not have a ‘Deck Wash Port’ (an attachment for a hose) you will need to tip the machine to clear the deck from beneath. It is best to tip from front to back so that the machine pivots/rests on the back wheels.

7. Servicing: Don’t forget that Annual Servicing is recommended by the manufacturers and is a requirement if you want to extend the guarantee beyond the first year.
