Solid No Frills Logsplitter
Four stars because the MD Logsplitter does lack some of the frills incorporated in more expensive splitters. But the key here is 'more expensive'. The MD splitter does what's expected without fuss and bother, and for the price what more can you expect?
Assembly of the stand is straightforward but lifting the splitter into position on the stand was much easier with two. When in position bolting up is a fairly simple one man job. As mentioned in a previous review the stand is a little low, but is probably a reasonable compromise as a one size fits all.
Once set up the splitter is easy and straightforward to use. While speed is compromised by the lack of a stroke-length feature, in practice this probably adds only seconds to the operation and for the average user won't be noticeable. I split a week's worth of logs in about 40 minutes, the majority of time spent lifting wood from the log pile and stacking the split logs.
I deliberately ran a number of very thick, knotted logs through the splitter as a trial and was pleasantly surprised to find it managed to cope very well. I also managed to split some fairly thin 'kindling' although this was less efficient than using a hand axe and was more to test the limits of the splitter than anything.
Again as previously mentioned, the splitter and stand is heavy to move around and on anything but a hard level surface would, I think, need to be carried rather than rolling on the stand's wheels.
The nuts and bolts for the stand were missing on arrival but were quickly sent on following a call to customer services.
Overall then very pleased with the product, price and service from MowDirect.
