From top UK brand Mountfield, the SP53 is a versatile and fast-working machine that’s capable of handling typically variable British conditions; and which offers the sort of productivity essential for anyone maintaining a substantial lawn.
At its core is a Mountfield ST170 engine; a top-quality, 166cc four-stroke air-cooled power-plant that benefits from OHV technology - you’ll enjoy low fuel-costs with reduced emissions, less fatigue-inducing vibration and a cut in neighbour-annoying noise.
The engine is rated at a hefty 3.5hp and has been equipped with a roomy fuel-tank for extended run-times.
Capable of either bagging, rear-discharging or mulching clippings - with the latter mode getting the job done around 30% faster - the three-in-one Mountfield SP53 Elite can be set-up to achieve great results whatever the conditions.
It boasts power-driven rear-wheels that take all the strain out of covering slopes and rough ground; and it benefits from a generous 51cm cutting-width which ensures large swathes are mown with each and every pass.
The Mountfield SP53 Self-Propelled 3-in-1 Petrol Lawnmower’s Hi-Wheel design not only provides scuff-free traction, but also makes it much easier to manoeuvre in overgrown grass.
A five-step height-of-cut - simple to set using only one lever - ensures you’ll be able to deal with variations in grass-conditions through the growing-season; while a front-mounted skid-plate delivers a scalp-free finish and superior collection-performance.
Also important is the blockage- and spillage-preventing 'collector full' indicator.

Early Days but Sturdy Machine - Cuts Well - Poor Instruction ManualReview by Jim Wardrope / (Posted on 14/08/2019)Seems a good solid machine, started first time. Assembly straightforward but instruction manual not good. Marked down on performance as only used once and need to see how it goes over time.

Mountfield SP53 LawnmowerReview by Peter Maurice / (Posted on 28/03/2019)First off, I bought this mower from MowDirect & can highly recommend the company. Answered the phone promptly, pre & post-sale, and were consistently polite & helpful.
The mower replaces my old 51cm Mountfield which I had used without problems, for 12 years. A little surface rust & the imminent need for a service prompted me to change the mower now. I only considered this Mountfield SP53 as it was the closest to my last machine & I am already delighted with the purchase.
It starts on the first or second pull of the cord & handles like a dream. Being self-drive, I actually found it easier to use than a small electric hover mower on my daughter's lawn!
The SP53 appears to be the Mountfield budget model for this range & at £300, it offers great value. It was certainly not worth paying an extra £60 for the Honda engine if my last Mountfield was anything to go by.
I have no hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending this machine for medium to large lawns.
