Description

Anyone seeking a high-quality but nevertheless affordable mower for a medium-sized lawn should place the attractively priced and solidly built Mountfield SP45 high on their list of potential purchases.

Key to its high-performance operation is its Mountfield engine; an easy-starting 100c power-pack that offers long-term reliability and a brand you can trust.

The Mountfield SP45 Self-Propelled Petrol Lawn Mower has been equipped with a rear-wheel power-drive, so inclines and rough, tussocky areas can be covered with minimal effort expended on the part of the operator.

It offers five-preset cutting-heights (20 – 70mm), so you can adapt to condition-changes throughout the growing-season; and it’s fitted with a comfortable, ergonomically optimised handlebar that you can fold down if space is at a premium in your storage area.

The capacious 55-litre grass-collector that comes with the Mountfield SP45 is made from fabric, which allows spent air to escape, in turn enabling the maximum amount of clippings to be packed-in. A hard top on the catcher prevents dust and pollen particles from rising-up into the user’s face when conditions are dry.

Also important on this MowDirect-exclusive machine is its hardwearing 45cm-wide steel cutter-deck that delivers piece-of-mind when it comes to robustness and longevity.

Features

  • A high-quality power-driven mower that represents superb value-for-money
  • Quality OHV engine for performance and reliability

  • Self-propelled transmission for low-effort mowing on slopes and rough grass

Disappointed WAIT - FIRST REVIEW I opted for a Mountfield because my parents had one and it was robust and reliable. This model was not. Firstly, the delivery wasn’t the next day, it took close to two weeks.

Assembly was fairly straightforward however it feels very flimsy and light due to the heavy usage of plastic.

The cutting height lever is so flimsy it’s a joke and constantly fails to drops down to the shortest cut which is a real pain. Even when warm it takes up to 8 pulls to start the engine. I’ve used it once and I’m returning it. I wouldn’t have this machine even if it was free!

Positive with a few suggestions. Excellent ordering & delivery service from MowDirect.

I was influenced by the 'Mountfield' brand. Price seems to be competitive. Assembly is pretty easy and was achieved without much use of the lengthy instructions.

I do think Mountfield could issue simpler instructions in English on one piece of paper for those who need them, make the grass box easier to assemble and perhaps make the handle height adjustable. Also, attaching the handle is a bit fiddly with the Allen key. The inclusion of a bottle of oil was a big plus..

Reading the reviews, I'm not sure everyone realises you need to press the pre-start button to prime the engine - it then starts first time every time.

I'm very satisfied with the Mountfield mower, it replaces a 'Wolf' machine which was finally scrapped after too many faults developed over 10 years!

Quality Product and Good Value I wanted to buy a self-propelled mower for my new house which has medium-sized lawned gardens. I was aware of Mountfield as a quality lawnmower manufacturer.

This special edition model is superb. The feel is of a robust, well engineered mower. It starts easily and the motor is superbly powerful for the job. The mowing result is a nice evenly cut lawn with no scraping and with a 45cm deck, it takes no time at all to complete the job.

A Great Machine I have only had this machine a week. It cuts the grass really well. I was slightly disappointed on the second time of using it that it had stopped. I had to wait for the engine to cool and it eventually started again. I will see what happens next time, I'm hoping its just a blip.

Easy to Order. Mower arrived quickly by courier. Easy to assemble. Oil supplied - very good. Simple to operate. Easy "cut length" setting - one lever.

Certainly powerful enough for duty, I used it on way overgrown (10 inch) grass (wet also - ughh!) and it gradually chowed through it, lots of grass container changes required though. Once grass cut to normal length the mower worked fine. I have two garden lawns, quite large - very suitable for this duty. I would recommend this product.

Excellent Price, Easyish Assembly, Prompt Start, Good Cut I had a Mountfield HP164 which was excellent for several years but died last week. At 79, I decided I need a Self-Propelled mower for my neat middle sized lawn. I did my homework, re price, reviews etc of several makes and chose a Mountfield SP180 from MowDirect. £100 under list price, ordered on a Saturday, delivered Tuesday am.

Manuals are confusing and generic, in 28 languages, so assembly was a bit slow at 45 minutes; provision of oil was greatly appreciated; 0.44 litre to full. Engine fired on third pull, then on first pull.
Mowed lawn on second highest setting, pace manageable stripe OK; I quickly learned to de-clutch a yard before turning

Altogether I am delighted; excellent value for money, I would recommend it.

Badly Designed This is my first Mountfield and to be honest I am not that impressed, built quality seems good although there are no instructions on putting the grass collector together which is fiddly if you don't have young hands.

It starts well it cuts short grass well but who cuts short grass? My lawn is about 20 by 20 foot my previous mower needed to be emptied twice this one requires five times. If the grass is longish the grass cuttings start to come out on the rear wheels. Also if the grass is damp or again longer than two inches it will clog up and stop. My old mower had no problems but was slightly more powerful.

Now to the ridiculous design flaw. To empty the grass collector you have to lift the flap with one hand and manoeuvre the collector under the handle. The old mower was a one handed operation and easy.

As you have probably guessed I would not buy this model again.

However the positive over my old mower is the weight makes it a lot easier to manoeuvre and one of my considerations when buying. Also it's easier to start but it's new so long term who knows. But the extra work involved in keep emptying it and raking the lawn after cutting means it's going on eBay after the summer and I will purchase another lawn mower.

If your lawn is about 10 foot square and you like to mow it every week this is probably a good buy for you. Any bigger it's not worth the hassle.

Not a Good Replacement I bought this mower to replace a rather aged Mountfield which gave excellent service but was push along. I now need a driven mower and thought this would be a good replacement. As mowers go it does the job but in competition with my old one it loses hands down.

The handle is 44" from the ground and high for a 'short' person like me at 5ft 4ins and I find I am reaching up and, with having to hold 2 controls, finding it very uncomfortable . With my old mower the handle is at 39" above ground and perfect for me and no controls to hold either. I find the speed when power driven much too fast and beyond slow walking pace.

On my old mower you unhook the grass box and lift it up through the handles in one movement, this mower you unhook the grassbox put it on the ground and the lift it from behind the handles in two movements.

Average Machine Easy to assembly, although it already had a few cosmetic scratches. That aside, off I went to discover that's it's merely a mediocre piece of machinery.

As mentioned in other reviews used also found the height lever has a tendency to jump out of position.

That will teach me to look for a low cost mower. So it's probably going to end up with my daughter and I will purchase a better quality machine. If you're looking for a mower my recommendation would be to look at another make

However cannot fault MowDirect with a very swift delivery.

First Petrol Mower, Good Choice Purchased the Mountfield SP180 after recommendations from 2 neighbours. I was very pleased with this mower right from delivery. It was easy to set up [30 min including filling with petrol and oil] and I was ready to cut my lawns.

The self-propelling function makes the mower ride over the grass effortlessly. On the advice of my neighbour I pull the clutch in about 2 foot from the lawn edge and just push it before turning to go back [this stops you going into the border too far if your late stopping the self-propelling clutch]

Also three cheers to MowDirect for their service, communication and choice of efficient courier.

Dream to Use Easily assembled, only had to attach handle and collection basket. Used a Mountfield belonging to my father-in-law, and which he'd had for years, prior to this purchase - and I have to say this is a million times better!

The self-propelled model is so much easier to use on the inclines, the collection is excellent, and the mesh material basket is a lot easier to empty than the moulded plastic one on the older model. Early days, but very happy so far.

Good Value Product in the Mountfield Range and Easy to Use The mower arrived quickly and was easy to assemble - just the handles and the grass box. Good that it was be supplied with engine oil.

Having the starter rope on the handle makes starting easy and every time I have used it it has started after a couple of pulls. It seems that there are many types of Briggs engines. My last Mountfield, which lasted 25 years, had a choke and variable speed. This one has no choke, just a primer and single speed, but all works very well.

The speed is just right and the engine cut out on the handle is a very good safety feature. I am very pleased with it and mowing is quite effortless .

Some Limitations First of all, MowDirect responded well to my queries and service and delivery were good. Yet I see that the picture of the mower has not changed that much. The control switch still seems to be there on left arm.

Instructions/booklets were confusing to say the least. Re the grass-box, the much vaunted 'mesh/air vents to allow better collection' merely block up, so don't vent.

Height Adjustment. This jumps out, it would have been much better to have had a recessed/latched or winding height adjuster. There is some poor design at the front edge of body: the void is a perfect grass cuttings trap and a pain to clear/clean.

The machine cuts well, but I miss the facility to park in neutral with engine running ( while emptying basket) . The fixed speed makes turning a bit of a performance in tight spots, so all in all, not convinced I have bought the right machine. I've had 2 motor Mountfields over the years, and still have an electric one, and this model is not as good.

Fantastic Value After much research I settled on the SP180 as a compromise between cost, value, features and engine manufacturer.

From taking it out of the box and assembling it (which was essentially fitting the handle and adding oil) to pulling the start cord took about 30 minutes. Started first time.

Considering our 0.5 acre lawn hadn't been cut for nearly four weeks and was a good 3 to 4 inches in length it performed exceptionally well, taking me around 90 minutes to mow - largely due to the number of trips needed to empty the grass collector! Adjusting the height of the blade on the go was a breeze. In the end the final finish was brilliant. Second use coming up this weekend so hoping for a similar positive experience with the blade on a lower setting.

However, compared to the self-propelled mower I was using it does seem to be more self-propelled. The speed at which it moved did catch me out, and on a number of occasions I felt I was having to hold the mower back. Keeping the self-propelled part going while turning sharply did result in a few wheel-spin marks in the lawn but after a while I got used to letting the throttle out when turning sharply.

Excellent service from MowDirect and I would certainly recommend both them and the SP180. A great balance between performance, value for money and ease of use.

Satisfactory if Lawn not too Uneven Aside for the attractive price I bought this on the strength that it would cope with my 'undulating' lawn. To its credit it started first time. However, after a run of just 15' the front wheels hit a slightly raised stepping stone and the height adjustment lever jolted from the highest position to the lowest! This resulted in the blade trying to mow the slab - not good.

I resolved to be more careful for the rest of the cut but another jolt on an uneven section of lawn saw the lever move from the highest position to the next notch below.

The English assembly instructions are clear enough if you take your time to work through them (once you have found them in amongst the other languages). The grass collection box assembly tried my patience and required a fair bit of strength to snap it together so that it was secure.

Other than these considerations the mower is a good buy.

Four Reasons Why You Might Not Want This Mower I should start by saying that MowDirect have been absolutely superb. They quickly exchanged this mower for another one and I only had to pay the difference in price.

If you have nice flat lawns with no rough grass this mower will probably be absolutely fine. For me it is under powered and I should have bought a more capable machine. The problems I had were:

1. The fixed speed is far too slow for me

2. The handles are very high so in rough grass it can cantilever on the front wheels and lift the back wheels off the ground

3. As noted in another review the wheels squeaked

4. It doesn't pick up as well as my old Mountfield. Not so much grass but leaves etc

Excellent Mower for a First Timer Having moved on from the London postage stamp garden, Flymo job to a first time petrol mower, there was some apprehension about having no idea what I was doing.

But not only is the mower easy to put together (although the manufacturer's instructions could be better in places a moment of thought will get you there) but MowDirect's customer service excellently handled my 'mowers for dummies' question when I eventually got stuck - and without making me feel like the idiot I knew I was being.

As for the mower itself, it looks great, is very easy to use and two mows in I couldn't be happier with the results and ease of use. This despite taking on a lawn that had been unattended for the summer and autumn, a couple of cuts at different blade height gave it no trouble at all just in the nick of time for winter.

I can't comment for experts looking for an opinion but a great mower for beginners/amateurs with a medium sized lawn.

Easy to Use I bought this because I'm not able to push a mower like most. As this is self-propelled it takes all the effort out of mowing. It came assembled; all I had to do was add fuel and oil.

The cut is good, the collector holds a good amount and it won't let you over fill the collection bin. Once finished it is easy to clean and all the parts that need to be changed are easy to get to .ie. air filter. This is a well made machine.

MowDirect are a professional and excellent company to deal with. I ordered over the phone, was kept informed about delivery all the way and would recommend both the mower and the company

Excellent Purchase I purchased this mower for my father who was finding it difficult to push his old Hayter. All the information from MowDirect, and subsequent information sent after purchase, was faultless. Regular emails were received confirming purchase and delivery time.

Assembly was a bit fiddly, with the instructions in English embedded halfway into the book. Was not clear what version of the mower I had - worked out it was Type I (for assembling the handle and grass catcher). But I got there in the end. Actually, simpler than first appeared.

After adding half of the included oil and a fairly small amount of petrol (that was all that was needed) I was away. Mower started immediately on first pull and it was quick to get a hang of the substantial pull. Used the 'primer' start button, although possibly not needed as was a warm day. First cut went like a dream and I expect it to last. Think it's a good engine. Recommended.

If I had to find a negative with this mower, it does not cut very short as it is a rough cut mower. Having said that it's a work horse, well worth it and I cant fault MowDirect, who delivered in less than 24hrs what more do you want? Oil is provided.

My 1st Petrol Mower I recently moved house and my trusted 10+ year old 350 Flymo has struggled with the increased lawn size. I estimate the lawns are 5 times larger and the poor Flymo took close to 3 hours to do the job.

After seeing Mountfield Mowers in B&Q I did a web search for stockists and hit upon MowDirect. I spent a bit of time looking at reviews and specs before making my decision. After speaking to a local service centre I decided to stay away from the Mountfield engines but didn't want to pay the premium for the Honda, so opted for the SP180 with a Briggs and Stratton engine. I ordered the machine over a bank holiday weekend and it turned up the following Wednesday.

Sadly there was a cross thread issue with some bolts that attach the handle to the body of the mower. I contacted MowDirect customer support and spoke to a technician who immediately organised a replacement mower. The replacement machine turned up 2 days later and the defective machine was uplifted at the same time.

I followed the instructions carefully. The mower was a doddle to set up. After filling it up with oil (included) and petrol and priming the engine, it started on the 3rd stroke. Subsequently it starts 1st time every time.

The mower takes a bit of getting use to, since as it is self propelled it can get away from you first time it starts. My new lawns were cut in a fraction of the time and that is no exaggeration.

The only negatives (and they're not major or deal breakers) Firstly, you have to pretty much guess the cutting height settings but it's easy enough to do a few test strips. Secondly, there are a few areas the Flymo will go that this machine would struggle with, hence I've invested in a new blade for the Flymo to take care of the slopes in the garden. I've used the mower a couple of times now and hope to get many years of service out of it.

I would definitely recommend the mower and MowDirect to anyone looking for garden machinery.

Overall, Very impressed with Mower and MowDirect Disclaimer: I've never owned a petrol mower or even a half-decent electric one before!

Mountfield SP180 Ordered 16:15 on Monday, arrived Wednesday lunchtime - excellent, free delivery with plenty of communication.

I didn't get to open the box for a couple of days. It did indeed come with the free oil - brilliant. After reading some of the reviews, I was not looking forward to putting it together. As a few have said, it's needlessly complicated: flicking back and forth between the English instructions buried in the middle of the manual and the diagrams on the inside cover is a pain (fold the corner of the English pages!). That said, in hindsight, it was actually simply attaching the handle to the mower and then putting the other top part of the handle together. I like how you can easily loosen and fold the top half of the handle for easier storage.

After putting together the mower, I then moved to the grass box. The stitching on the mesh was a complete mess and had a big hole along the seam. I was very disappointed, especially as it was 7pm on Friday, so knew nothing would happen until after the weekend. Plus my grass was in desperate need of a cut! I emailed customer services with some pictures that night.

By 09:06 Monday morning, customer services (Sally) had replied to let me know that they would order a grass box and send it on ASAP. When I explained that I really needed to cut the grass she said I would be free to keep the faulty box and use it until it breaks - then I'll have the replacement as a backup. What fantastic customer service. Very helpful - thank you Sally! New grass box arrived 3 days after, too. Very pleased.

Putting together the grass box is 'simply' forcing the rubber into the other plastic part (which is awkward) and then hooking around the metal frame (easy). It easily slots onto the back of the mower when you lift the flap. A couple of people mentioned the screws... I could see where they were supposed to go... but couldn't figure out what they screw into. I didn't bother, to be honest and have kept them aside for now.

Not having put oil in a petrol mower before, it was difficult to judge how much was going in... the dip stick didn't seem to be giving me consistent readings even after waiting. After slowly pouring half the bottle in and continually checking, I guessed that it should be enough and plucked up the courage to start 'er up. Given that I'm a novice, it took 3 pulls before I was giving it enough welly to start, then it pretty much started ever time after that - except when it was a little clogged (long wet grass). It's easy to adjust the height using the lever on the back wheel. After one cut of long grass in front and back gardens (going over the back garden twice) I emptied the box 3 times - easy to do. No adverse signs of not using those screws, either.

When you engage the 'drive system' the back wheels do all the pushing work for you. I was surprised at the pace of it - it really is a good walking pace, and not slow - even on 4/5" grass.

I have two modest gardens and went for this mower based on the self propulsion, name and great reviews. I'm not disappointed. In fact, I think it's probably overkill for my front and back as I could probably do both now in 15mins. Can't complain at that.

My only minor negative comment is that the wheels do look very plasticky. Unlike the rest of the mower, they don't make you feel like they're built to last. With a great engine and chassis, they just look a bit cheap. We'll see how they hold up over time. I guess being cheap, when/if they do break then it should be an inexpensive replacement.

Don't be put off by the assembly; look at the mower, read the text and then look at the pictures. It isn't as bad as you initially think it is!

Very pleased with the mower and MowDirect in particular. I would easily recommend both.

The assembly was a hassle with my 66 year old hands...What I would do to the person who invented the Allen key was best left unsaid..I am too ladylike to repeat!!

What was wrong with the old grass boxes? You now have to join plastic and net with a rubber seal! more hassle for my old hands...where is the Voltarol?

I gave a rough guide about what I was looking, what I had found or researched already and was able to get some great advice on which product was going to suit my needs best.

Ordered this and was delivered the 2nd working day. The mower was pretty easy to assemble with the supplied Allen Key, the grass bag is a little tricky to put together but with gentle persuasion from a screwdriver to push home it went together fine Having only used the mower once can't really comment on performance other than to say, it's a whole lot easier now.

Good mower and good value MowDirect delivered quickly with good aftersales support.

I assembled the mower in about 20 minutes, put in oil and petrol, pressed the prime button as instructed and it started on the first pull. I've just used it and it's quiet, cuts well and the self-propelled power is adequate on the level but needs a touch of assistance up inclines.

All in all a painless, quick and enjoyable way to cut my lawn. Much better than my previous electric mower. Very pleased.

Lightweight Machine that Copes with Heavy Work Order took 5 days to arrive but we are pretty far north. Easy to assemble, agree with others that grassbox can be a bit fiddly to assemble, but no great hassle.

Have used machine for 2 days cutting which is approx' 12 hours. The grass is damp but machine coped very well, lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, I use it for the smaller gardens. I look to get at least one season out of it, but if I give it plenty of TLC maybe more? All things considered it's good value for the money.

Value for Money Assembly was relatively easy, but a poor design fault is apparent when attaching the handle to the main body. You have to be extra careful in starting to put the screws which attach the handle. It is very easy to cross thread and once that happens its very difficult to fix. They do give a warning on the box that this might happen but no advice on how to fix it if it happens to you. Three screws went on easily but the last one cross-threaded. I managed to get some sort of fix using extra washers but was not a happy bunny.

Otherwise, the machine started easily and cuts well, the bag is not as good as my old box type but is lighter and is a bit fiddly to assemble.

Overall it's what I expected. Prompt delivery and I would buy again from the supplier.

Great Mower, Great Deal £100 off and £100 to service my aging mower (another Mountfield) this looked like a no-brainer and too good to be true... but it was everything as advertised. Ordering process really easy, trackable delivery (1-2 days) and on time.

Assembly intuitive, but instruction pictures all clear, though the collection basket was a bit fiddly (comes in two parts you have to push together all around its edge). Comes with engine oil you put into the mower. Obviously you need to sort your own petrol out!

It started first time. Did the first cut of the year, on pretty long grass. My old 16" pushed mower's collection basket would require at least one empty. This did it all in one go. My first powered mower. Well worth the extra £50 over the hand pushed mower, especially at £249 for an 18" cut. Highly recommended.

Great Mower and Good Price. Bought this to replace my old 25yr old Mountfield. The mower was easy to assemble, but do take your time and read all the instructions.

Started on third pull of the rope from new. Brilliant bit of kit and at a good discount as it was on offer £249 instead of £349.

This, like my old Mountfield, has a Briggs and Stratton engine and, provided you use top quality oil and change it regularly, it will last donkeys years. (25 yrs for my old mower!)

A Wedding Gift. I wish I could complete your review but while I am the purchaser i will not be the assembler or user. This lawn mower has all of the features I would look for in a good mower. A Briggs & Stratton 4 stroke engine is a plus. Rear bagging, self propelled - what is not to like?

The delivery was great, just two days wow! Free delivery - what excellent service.

If this lawn mower provides the reliability and longevity as my 25 year old Briggs & Stratton driven mower, our nephew and his new bride will find cutting the grass enjoyable cutting and be able to spend more time together.

Price, Delivery and Usage Second to None Only thing I found a little awkward was assembling the grass catcher.

Getting the rubber edging into the channel took some doing and in the end I used washing up liquid as a lubricant to ease the rubber into the slot. Otherwise, assembly was simple and the unit started first pull (after adding the oil of course).

I've not had a self-propelled model previously. I used to run up and down the garden cutting the grass - the self propulsion on this is a leisurely walking pace. Would have given it 5 stars instead of 4 stars if it was quicker.

Good machine, easy to control and cuts very nicely. Machine was delivered on time, was reasonably straightforward to assemble and started after a few pulls.

It cuts the grass well and height adjustment is easy. Only gripe I had was that the oil fill cap/dipstick was cross-threaded.

Because the engine is Briggs and Stratton, Mountfield's service help line were unable to supply a replacement, which, in my view they should have, and instead referred me to their local service agent. They gave me a replacement from an old machine, which works fine, as they said it was not worth going through the warranty procedure for it.

Great machine I had a Mountfield for several years and found it to be virtually indestructible, started first time every year despite getting very poor maintenance from me. Eventually I hit one hidden flint-stone too many, twisted the half shaft and sent the machine to mower heaven.

This time I decided on the self-propelled model and now wish I'd invested in this model ages ago. It's a dream to use and is handling my moss-strewn lawns with total ease.

Only criticism is, as with others, I found the grass box rather awkward to assemble, but still a great machine.

Be careful - upside down thing I bought this for my daughter. I wanted to make it last. Before assembly I undersealed the underside of the deck. The mower was on its side not upside down. Then I put it together. Put oil in as per instructions. No petrol. Pulled the starter cord.

It would not turn over easily. Used the cutter blade to turn the motor over. Took the spark plug out. Oil was everywhere. In the air filter, dripping out all over. Cleaned up. No oil in crank case. Topped up oil. Spark plug in al little petrol. Started first time. Lots of smoke which soon cleared. Panic over.

So remember - do not turn the mower over more than 90 degrees!

2 more things. Dip stick is a pain and you can not tell the oil level clearly. Front wheel could do with a shim as they wobble a little.

Hope it helps

Easy to assemble, although it needs a strong hand to get the two halves of the grass box fitted together. Mower running half hour after opening box, and that included going out and buying oil. Started straight away. Can't really go wrong engine wise, B&S reputation stands for itself.

Mower well made for price and self drive works well. Bought the mower to replace non-drive mower of similar size and engine. Put it through its paces with very overgrown lawns. Can recommend.

My first petrol mower I used to have gardeners, but several proved unreliable. I am now retired so I have the time. However, I didn't want mowing to be hard work. Hence I looked for a self propelled petrol mower. The price was right, the mower I chose was perfect for the job and it was delivered within 48 hours.

I found assembly a little complicated. The instructions could have a bit clearer and the diagrams a little larger. However, I managed and was soon mowing.

It's just so easy - just guide it along and it does all the work. I only have a medium sized lawn and so as long as I mow regularly, the grass collector only needs emptying once at the end.

I am happy with this product and the service from MowDirect.

Good choice Having used an electric mower for over 5 years I decided to go back to a self-propelled, petrol driven mower.

The Mountfield is a good and sturdy machine although assembly wasn't without its problem. The grass collector is awful to assemble and the manual does now make clear exactly you should do. However the penny eventually dropped and I was successful. At the end of the assembly procedure I had two small screws left over but nowhere in the manual does it explain what they are for. A phone call quickly solved that for me - they fit into two holes at the front of the grass bag and secure it to its metal frame.

Having used the mower once I am pleased with the result, although at first I found the machine heavy to use, but soon got used to it. My one criticism of the mower is that because the driving wheels are outside of the cutting blade, you can't cut close to the edge. .

Overall though, I recommend this machine.

Oil dipstick not the easiest to remove or replace or indeed read the oil level. Draining of oil, when necessary, will not be easy having to turn the machine on its side and catch the used oil. Would incorporating a drain plug have been so expensive?

Assembly problems, but good machine Got off to good start by machine arriving day after order. But then took ages to assemble, mainly because of useless instruction booklet in 20-odd different languages but poor English version, with hopeless diagrams. As there were really only two parts to assemble (upper part of handle to lower part, and grass collection box) I should have just followed my own instincts and it would have been simple. But felt I should follow instructions and had a nightmare! Once it was finally together it worked well, starting first time and easy to use. Only used it a few times so far, but all going well (hope that's not famous last words!).

Basic but performs well! I bought this mower to replace a 9 year old Atco which had a plastic body. The rear roller mounts broke and made the mower useless. So, I wanted a metal body mower at a reasonable price. My wife looked on the internet for some considerable time before choosing this mower. It is fairly basic with a Mountfield engine which is not overpowered but does the job as long as you don't want it to continually cut 3" tall grass. It is fairly easy to assemble, but the instructions could be a lot better. It dosn't come with engine oil so this has to be purchased separately. You need a funnel to put the oil in as the opening is at a funny angle. The mower is light to handle but sturdy enough. I pressed the pre-start 3 times as required and then pulled the start cord; it started first time - no problem; it also started from hot without a problem. I've used it a second time since and all went well. I set it on the lowest setting which was too low and is only suitable for a very level and flat lawn; the second setting is alright for my lawn. It cuts very well and throws the grass well into the bag. The self propelled system works well and the pace is a slow walking. The only problem my wife has it that because it does not have a rear roller, it does not leave a pattern on the lawn. I would recommend this mower as good value for the price, but probably not suitable for commercial or continuous heavy use; but it will be perfectly acceptable for most gardeners.
