Description

Easy to operate and highly-effective, the Mountfield SP414 - SP164 will prove the perfect purchase for those seeking a practical, hassle-free way to look after a less substantial lawn (up to around 400m2). It’s characterised by its power-drive to the rear-wheels; a high-spec feature that allows for effortless mowing on slopes and areas of bumpy ground that would be difficult to traverse with a hand-push machine.

The Mountfield SP414 has a compact 39cm working-width, so it will come into its own in gardens with awkward corners, narrow gateways and closely-spaced trees and ornaments to negotiate. It’s powered by Mountfield’s 100cc RS100 engine, a four-stroke power-unit that’s renowned for its quiet, clean-running and economical performance. Starting the engine is fast and dependable.

Supplied with a large-capacity 40-litre grass-collector, the Mountfield SP414 Self-Propelled Petrol Lawn Mower can be used for long periods between trips to the compost-heap. It’s constructed around a highly-robust polypropylene deck that won’t rust and provides lightweight durability; and if gives you the choice of five preset cutting-heights (25 – 70mm), so you’ll be able to create a fine-tuned finish and make performance-boosting adjustments to suit the conditions.

Other features on the Mountfield SP414 include a fold-down handle, which can be quickly collapsed to save space; and an Operator Presence Control, which act like a ‘deadman’s handle’, stopping the engine (and therefore the blade) when you let go of the bail-arm.

Features

  • Self-drive design which eliminates the need to push
  • Compact 39cm cutting-width – ideal for lawns around 20m x 20m
  • Collapsible handlebar saves space in the shed
  • Ultra-reliable and highly economical four-stroke engine
  • Five-step height-of-cut for fine-tuned finish
  • Operator Presence Control for enhanced operator-safety
  • Rust-resistant polypropylene chassis

Excellent value for money Sturdy, good quality in its price range - has great manoeuvrability, ideal for the smaller to medium sized garden - it’s self propelling feature is an added bonus and recommended.
Whilst easy to assemble, the directions are not entirely clear, but on the whole, a great purchase.
Very impressed with Mow Direct in all respects from purchase process, customer communication and delivery.

First Class The service from these guys was outstanding. I cocked up my order and emailed them late on a Friday night. They replied on a Sat morning first thing (when they were supposed to be closed) and sorted it all out. The mower arrived in two working days when all the other suppliers were saying it would be two weeks.

If only other retailers behaved like these guys!!!

The mower itself is easy to assemble and operate. It has been used several times and I am delighted with the value, performance and ease of use.

So Pleased I got it ... I have 1.25 Acre lawned garden which is bumpy in places but reasonably flat mostly and also has lots of moss ... I read numerous reviews about alot of dofferent mowers and i was nervous when i lept for the Mountfield ... but i shouldnt have been ... this mower is excellent, build quality is superb, it was easier than i thought to put together, other reviews suggested issue here but i found it no harder than any other ... It cuts beautifully and although there is some wheel spinning this is controlled by the way you operate it. Overall the mower is superb and i have notone complaint.

The delivery time was brilliant and i will 100% use this company and brand again.

SUPERB ALL ROUND EXPERIENCE!

In these most difficult times with a lot of company’s working from home, I am not surprised that the wrong lawnmower gets delivered, but with great staff the problem was soon rectified.

Great Mower, Speedy Delivery and Great Price. MowDirect were the cheapest place on the net and had a great reputation so it was an easy decision to make in choosing them to buy from. My problem was choosing the right mower, having only ever used electric models, but after seeing hundreds of excellent reviews for the SP414, I put my order in.

The mower arrived next day and it took me about 30 minutes to read the manual and put it together. Its quite an easy assembly process but putting oil in was a bit of a pain, the manual does say not to put the mower on its side, but it's impossible to fill it with oil without doing that or having a funnel. I purchase a funnel from elsewhere, and filled it with the oil provided, Mountfield need to add a funnel in the future.

The mower is easy to use and is self propelled, it has turned a chore into an enjoyable event!

Not Impressed The mower came (direct from the manufacturer) with a leaking plastic can of oil wrapped in what looked like thick cling film. Not a great start. Putting it together was... interesting. I do a lot of assembly and these instructions were not written by anyone who knows how to write instructions.

It's impossible to get the oil in unless you have a funnel or decant via a squeezy bottle as the filler is mounted at 45 degrees and the labels and instructions scream at you not to turn it on its side!

It starts and it mows..... until it finds the slightest undulation whereby it stops dead, you bump into it, and the back wheels churn up your lawn. On the next run those churns are then enough to stop you dead again.

Now it may be that it works for postage stamp gardens which are 100% flat. I've adjusted the height but it doesn't help.

Not impressed.

Great Little Machine I was looking for a petrol mower that would be suitable for a smallest garden, because I did not want to fad around with cables etc.

I am very impressed with this machine, I found it quite easy to assemble as you only have to assemble the handle & grass box. It is well made, light to move around, but still looks a sturdy machine. My grass has a slight slope & it is easy to move it around even with the slope because it quite light.

My one niggle is to get the oil into the machine, you do need a small funnel, because you can't pour straight out of the oil bottle because the engine gets in the way, but that does not detract from how good the mower is.

Good But... Think hard about whether you really want the self propelled version. It takes a lot of getting used to and is very powerful. This makes cutting time really quick but it's hard to manoeuvre. Also this mower is ideal for bigger, straightforward lawns but less good if you have lots of curved edges and tricky borders.

Excellent Machine Read previous reviews regarding assembly and I agree, look at the main booklet as the single sheet can be misleading. I was looking for the clip which you fit onto the handle to hold the 'starter cord' but was not in the packet. I can only assume that it relates to a similar model.

Again, the same with grass box assembly. If items only relate to certain models then this should be stated stating what models it relates to.

It also states on the outside of the box that oil is not provided, however there was a bottle of oil packed separately in the box which was a nice surprise.

I have only used machine once and am pleased with the cut.

Maybe a little lightweight! First and foremost 10/10 to MowDirect for service and delivery!

Like many other reviewers I struggled with the assembly instructions, especially as the single sheet seemed to relate in part to an earlier or totally different model - very difficult tightening the bolts holding the lower handle to the deck when they actually were a push fit!

Probably enough has already been said about attaching the grass box/bag to the frame but suffice it to say an utter nightmare - again use the booklet as the A4 sheet is of little use - there is nowhere to fit screws although they are supplied!

Mountfield/Stiga need to get their assembly instructions sorted and make sure that they relate to the model supplied - not really good enough for a company that claims to sell more mowers in the UK than anyone else. Additionally just where are they made? the mower says Slovakia, the box says Italy - very International...........

Finally, having had a metal-decked mower for the last 12 years I have found this model to suffer from a degree of rear wheel spin particularly when the grass bag is loaded or the lawn somewhat 'lumpy'! To be fair we have only just moved and the front lawn definitely needs re-laying and levelling and considering the length of the grass at the rear of the property it did a pretty good job - time will tell.

No criticism of MowDirect but Mountfield 'could do better'!!

Excellent service, easy to assemble and starts first time. Mower turned up the day after ordered. Easily assembled. Started first time . Only time will tell if the mower will be robust and have a long life.

One minor problem, adding oil is awkward and could be simplified by supplying oil container with a tube delivery attachment. Dipstick was difficult to read.

SP414 Comments Assembly is straightforward if you ignore the single-sheet "Final assembly Instructions" and use the "Operation Instructions" handbook instead.

My only problem was with filling the engine with oil. A funnel is essential, because the filler is hidden under the body of the engine. The dipstick is made of yellow plastic; the oil is honey-coloured. Reading the level is, therefore, not easy. Screwing the combined filler cap/dipstick back in the engine is probably easy if you are left-handed and have tiny hands. I struggled. What is needed is an oil filler pipe extension tube. I've not been able to find one on the Mountfield website.

The mower started first time, runs smoothly and cuts well. With the filler pipe extension I would give it five stars.

Great wee lawnmower. Bought this to replace my ageing Mountfield SP which finally bit the dust after about 12 years of faithful service. Bought this model based on the positive reports on this site - and they were right.

Ordered Monday evening and delivered Wednesday. Fairly easy to put together if you use your common sense. The oil was a bit tricky to get in - best to use a funnel.

Started on second pull of the cord and off we went. Really light and easy to use. Much to my delight it is so much easier than my old machine to start. Altogether a great buying experience from MowDirect - and a great price for a great piece of kit

Worth the wait Mower was out of stock when I placed my order, but MowDirect rang me and advised the delay immediately. When in stock, the mower was delivered promptly and was well packed.

There were no issues with assembly although the instructions could have been better. Filling with oil was stressed as was not tipping the machine on its side, which of course, made filling with oil a little more difficult. Finally, it was filled with petrol and started first pull.

In use, it did not block up even though the grass was a little damp and it produced a good cut. Above all, it's lighter than my old mower and so easier to get up my patio steps to the upper lawn. Good value for money, good service, I'm impressed!

An excellent substitute We have had a Mountfield push mower for several years, but now need the assistance of self-propulsion. We found that this model was ideal for our undulating lawn, and have now used it three times, being very pleased with the performance and clean cutting pick-up.

We did struggle with the assembly, as the instructions/ diagrams were minute, and probably would have benefitted from a visit to Specsavers.

Overall, very pleased with the purchase. The internet purchase procedure was simple and the mower delivered very promptly.

The assembly would have been easier with better instructions. The single sheet in addition to the booklet was clearly intended to supplement a set of instructions which are too small to read, but even this leaflet was insufficient. The two screws at the bottom of the handle took a great deal of thought and head scratching as the diagram was hopelessly inadequate.

Having read of difficulty in assembling the grass box, this turned out easier than expected due mainly to the forewarning.

The above criticisms relate to the producer Mountfield. MowDirect cannot be faulted!

Good quality, easy starter Easy to assemble straight out of the box, just the handle and the grass box to build.

Oil for the engine is supplied and there are plenty of warning labels telling you to add it before starting the engine.

Started 2nd pull after adding the oil and fuel, thereafter starts 1st pull if you give it 3 pushes on the primer.

Height adjustment for cutting would be easier if it was a single adjustment lever; however there are 2 adjusters for the front and 1 for the back.

Cutting and grass collection are good and the self-drive is excellent for going uphill, or you can just push it if you want some exercise.
