Product information

Description

Offering bagging; rear-discharge; mulching; and side-discharge as standard, the fantastically well-equipped Mountfield HW531-PD is flexible enough to cope with a wide variety of grass-types and weather conditions.

Power comes from a Mountfield ST55 four-stroke engine that has a substantial 160cc cylinder displacement, and which does away with the conventional side-valve arrangement in favour of an overhead-valve one. This means a marked reduction in noise; vibration; exhaust emissions; and fuel consumption.

The Mountfield HW531-PD 4-in-1 Self-Propelled Lawn Mower has power-driven rear-wheels, so it’s particularly suited to gardens with banks and tussocky, undulating areas sections to deal with. The drive wheels are far larger than the front wheels for greater traction and improved manoeuvrability.

Thanks to its generous 53cm width-of-cut, this premium model will enable you to get even larger-scale jobs done in quick-time.

It benefits from having six preset cutting-heights, so you can choose the one that will deliver the finish you prefer (adjustment is via a single lever); and it’s fitted with a quick-release collapsible handlebar that ensures it will occupy very little space when not in use.

Other stand-out features include an anti-scalp plate that works to prevent turf damage when using the lowest cutting-height; and an all-steel cutter-deck for impressive strength and durability.

Features

  • An exceptionally versatile mower with four cutting-modes
  • Choose between bagging; mulching; rear-discharge; and side-discharge
  • Advanced overhead-valve engine from Mountfield
  • Power-drive for the effortless negotiation of inclines and rough ground
  • Large-diameter drive-wheels provide enhanced manoeuvrability and traction
  • 53cm cutting-width ensures a fast work-rate
  • Six-stage height-of-cut means a ‘just so’ finish is achievable
  • Fold-down handlebar makes storage simple
  • Anti-scalp plate prevents gouging when using the lowest height-setting
  • Strong and durable steel mower-deck

Good The 4 Bolts that hold the Carriage together even though they are Tight, Feel Flimsy.

I would be better if these Bolts could be tightened with Spanners, instead of the Quick Release that's supplied.

Upgrade from Previous Mountfield Mower This lawnmower has been excellent from the day I bought it. After starting on the first pull it's been easy to use and is a huge upgrade over my previous Mountfield.

I did have a slight issue with the metal handle for controlling the drive mechanism: I knocked into a tree whilst mowing and the metal bar popped out of its socket. This has been sorted by bending and widening the bar slightly to make it tighter in its mount. I did this by hand and it hasn't popped out since.

Apart from that my main criticism would be a lack of in-depth paper instructions for assembly and use. I'm guessing these could be found online, but once I had it I was too eager to get mowing, so put it together using some common sense and the pictures online. However it was easy to assemble, but some more detail and advice on how to use the various accessories would have been appreciated.

All in all this is a fantastic bit of kit for the price. It'll do everything I need for my medium sized lawn in half the time of my older, 39cm wide mountfield, and having mulching as an option is great. Very impressed so far.

Mountfield HW531 Good machine but did find hoselock feature very effective. Would have preferred better instruction book not very clear. Had to wait for oil being delivered before it could be used due to Covid 19 lockdown . Machine started first go and cut the grass easily. Would recommend.

Excellent for my rough lawn! Needed a mower that could handle the rough terrain of my orchard. So far, this one has been perfect. Easy to start, big box, easy to manoeuvre. My last Mountfield lasted 20 years, only the body let it down, the engine (Honda) good as ever. Had to watch the Lawnmower man on YouTube to assemble. The instructions flummoxed me but once watched I assembled it easily in my own.

My Best Buy Mower to date Very quick delivery - the driver even put the mower in the shed for my wife. It was assembled in 20 minutes with no issues.

Started on second pull ( first would be to get the petrol to the carb). I have marked down the ease of use and assembly purely because the mulching plug is difficult to remove from its locating holes and the side discharge chute is awkward to insert. I am sure this will not be an issue once the mower is in regular use.

Good strong deck, nice washout plug to assist in cleaning. Overall it should be 5 star rating for all fields (no Pun) but I have to find something to mark it down. It is worthy of more but some purchasers may find these items important and relevant to their decision. I give myself 5 stars for the excellent choice of mower

Pleased With This Mower Early days but I am very pleased with this mower.

It has all the features I expected and they are well designed and work well. Good value for money. It is a bit noisier than I expected and some of the handle folding mechanisms look and feel a bit flimsy.

Delivery by MowDirect was very good and they were quick to respond to any queries I had. Assembly was quick and straightforward.

Great Lawnmower Good Value. Had this mower a few weeks now and have no complaints so far. I have tried all the accessories and they work fine ,makes a great cut and a pleasure to use. I used the mulching tool today - it saves a lot of time and you don't have empty a grass box.

Would recommend this mower to any one .

Needs Better Instructions! I was very impressed with the speed of delivery from MowDirect but wish the assembly instructions had been as good! Finally got it ready & was impressed with the mower starting on the first pull. I've only used it once so far but did find it quite heavy to manoeuvre ( but I am a 65yr old female).

However I was pleased with the actual performance of the mower & hopefully I'll get used to using a self propelled machine after many years of using my old petrol push mower.

The Cutting Edge Bought this mower as a temporary replacement for my tractor mower which needed servicing and repair. It starts first pull and mulches grass with ease. You can use the various options to change from mulching to collecting grass etc, depending on the grass condition.

I am very pleased with my purchase and am sure that it will get used regularly with my other grass cutters. My only disappointment was the so called manual, surely the UK can have a simple one or two sheet set of instructions.

Sublime. Lawn mowing is Enjoyable Once Again . Ever since the horses ate my ride-on mower, I've been forced to mow our 35 x 25m walled-garden lawn with the petrol push-along mower, that I use for our front lawns. Whilst it left a pleasing stripe, the sheer exhaustive effort involved was far from pleasant.

Then I saw the Mountfield HW531 and at a price I couldn't believe. That it also has a sizeable 21" cut, a powerful engine, is self-propelled and has a 4-way discharge system, was simply 'music to my eyes'.

The mower arrived swiftly from Mowdirect and I had it assembled very quickly. I'll skip the bit about an error in manufacture by Mountfield themselves, meaning that I had to wait for a replacement (longer) cable to arrive from them. I must stress that this was an solely an error by Mountfield and that MowDirect were nothing but helpful, professional and unexpectedly generous throughout.

The mowing experience itself is like chalk-and-cheese compared to the old machine. The motor has bucket loads of power and made short work of the now 7 inches long walled-garden grass.

The self-propulsion is excellent, driving the mower along, over and through the various humps, bumps and dips along the way. All of this one-handed, which was a relief.

With regards to the 4-way discharge, for large lawns with long grass I would recommend the rear discharge without the box (for obvious reasons). I wouldn't recommend the side discharge (until the grass is shorter), as you'll end up having to mow the discharge and the un-cut grass on the next strip.

Now that the lawn is down to 1.5 inches (or thereabouts), the side chute and the mulching action should be no problem.

All in, an incredible machine that has put the fun back into mowing. Cheers.

Great Mower Highly Recommended Used this mower on everything from long wet grass to short lawns. It works really well and the side discharge, which is one reason I chose this mower, works particularly well, meaning there is no blocking of the discharge on long grass.

Engine starts and re-starts easily, the height adjustment is great, and the self drive take up silky smooth. All in all fantastic value for money and highly recommended.

Excellent Mower, Highly Recommended The Mountfield does exactly what is says on the box. Took me minutes to assemble and away I went. Starts straight away and the finish of the cut is very good. Even with wet grass there were no blockages.

The adjustable height makes it perfect for all terrain including bumps and hills, but occassionally the height switched during cuts so had to put back to the correct cutting height.

Solid Mower with Wide Range of Capabilties My previous Mountfield mower lasted for 11 years, and only failed due to terminal deck rust. It was only a cheap DIY store model, but rarely failed to cope with all types of ground and grass heights. I'm hoping for even better performance from this one, as the deck is made of thick metal, the engine and self-propelling action is powerful, and the single-lever cutting height facility is a breeze to use.

The 4-in-1 options for collection/discharge/mulching set this model apart from many other mowers, and allows use on all grass types, from neatly-cut lawns to rough meadows and orchards. Yes, it is heavier then many other push mowers, but if you let the self-propelling action to do most of the work, (rather than dragging the mower backwards), it's easy and satisfying to use.

Great value for money lawnmower Easy start and makes cutting our 3 lawns an easier task. Grass bag is smaller than my last Mountfield, so I just need to empty it more frequently.

Our previous Mountfield lasted 12 years and was well used; this one is slightly lighter which is great for me, and it is more than capable for the job. Well worth purchasing.

A powerful machine with some shortcomings. I have a garden with around 1.5 acres of grass of differing qualities but unsuitable for a ride on. This machine gave me the highest setting, plus the side discharge that I would need for the long grass.

I have found that with the grass damp and very long it had difficulty coping and blocked the discharge hole, requiring regular stopping and clearing.

When collecting it leaves the lawns neat and tidy.

It takes a bit of starting from cold (several pulls) and once part-warm it also requires the choke to be set to get it to start. Perhaps it is an idiosyncrasy of this particular engine but I find it a bit annoying.

This is not a Briggs and Stratton engine so we will have to see how well it performs over time. It does require the oil to be changed after the first 5 hours (one lawn cutting for me) so 2 packs of oil would have been a useful addition rather than the one for first fill. I now have to find a supplier for the mower oil locally.

It was easy to put together and seems solidly built, particularly with the height control which was very weak on my previous Mountfield and the handle broke.

It's early days but I would recommend this to anyone with a large garden with both rough ground and flat lawns.

Great mower I changed my mind a few times before settling on this mower and MowDirect were a pleasure to deal with.

This mower is heavy! That is why I gave it 4 on 'Ease of Use'.

I'd never used a mulching mower before this one. I've used it on wet and dry grass with great results and barely any evidence of the clippings being re-distributed in the lawn.

The engine starts perfectly from cold and as long as you get the throttle in the right position, it starts fine when warm as well.

Good mower. Problematic instructions I am pleased with the performance of this mower, except it tends to scalp the edges of the lawn.

The assembly instructions are a bit of a problem. There were two sets with exactly opposite instructions. Also the deflector plate came installed without instructions to remove it for normal use.

I think it unlikely that there are better mowers available for this price - at least I hope not.
