Description

With great features and superior build-quality, the hand-propelled Mountfield HP45 delivers the kind of cutting-power, durability and ease-of-handling you'd would normally expect to find way up in another price bracket. Supplying the power is a Mountfield engine; a 100cc four-stroke air-cooled unit with overhead-valve (OHV) technology for smooth, low-vibration operation with reduced emissions and improved fuel-economy; and a well-engineered recoil mechanism for dependable pull-starts in both the short- and long-terms.

The Mountfield HP45 Petrol Rotary Hand-Propelled Lawnmower has a 45cm width-of-cut that ensures the efficient coverage of lawns up to around 600m2, while being compact enough to make it easy to manoeuvre around and between obstacles. Manoeuvrability is further enhanced by its lightweight build (25kg) and slightly larger rear-wheels. Thanks to its aerodynamically-optimised deck-shape, which means clippings are driven at speed into the roomy 55-litre catcher, the Mountfield HP45 excels when it comes to bagging in typically damp British conditions.

The collector is made of loosely-woven fabric that lets air flow through so as to ensure it gets fully packed. A hard plastic top prevents hayfever-inducing dust from rising in drier conditions. This model offers simple single-lever height-of-cut adjustment through five positions, from a low 20mm for a close cut on formal lawns, up to 70mm for the successful management of longer, rougher grass. Also featured is a fully foldable handlebar that works to save space in your shed or car-boot.

This HP45 is Limited Edition Red Model from Mountfield. With 45cm / 18'' cut and Steel Deck

Good product, bad service Bought this mower as a direct replacement for a previous mower. The previous one only lasted about 4 years, but was easy to use, so decided to give the manufacturer the benefit of the doubt.
I oredered it on a Tuesday with a promise of next day delivery. When it hadn’t arrived by Friday, I phoned, only to be told that it had missed the collection and would “definitely be there Monday”. When I pointed out that Monday was a Bank Holiday the lady then said it would be Tuesday. It did arrive Tuesday, 7 days after ordering!!! No apology or anything.

Great mower We had to purchase a new mower after our Einhell gave up after only 3 years. We went straight to a Mountfield, my Dad’s is over 20 years old so I’m hoping for the same!

It was easy to assemble, 2 screws left over seems normal (hopefully!). Contrary to others, I didn’t find the grass collector difficult to assemble. The oil cap is in an awkward place, a funnel is definitely needed. Started first time.

It’s fairly light, easy to manoeuvre but still solid enough. I’ve used it 5 times now and always starts easily, definitely easier than the Einhell. Very pleased with my purchase so far. 5 stars.

Slight problem with the routing of starter cable. Problem with poor assembly instructions. Service department very helpful, and initial problem solved. After 1st use mower put in shed and on taking out for 2nd mow it was found that cable used for starting mower was split exposing the cable. Have tried to contact service department with no luck. Not the best backup but do hope it gets better and problem gets sorted.

Solid Reliable Basic. I bought a very similar product some 26 years ago albeit under a different flag, and only disposed of it a couple of years ago when the body finally rusted through such that it couldn't do its job properly any more. The design is basic and robust and has changed little in that time but with minor improvements. At special offer price this is cheaper than second hand and I hope it will be a similarly good long term investment. Faults - the wheel hubs fell off even before I'd started the engine but frankly you don't even need them. If you hit a bump the leveling mechanics reset themselves to minimum length, which you may not notice until it grinds to a halt in longer grass. Positives - It does what is expected. The rotor cuts and you push it, what do you expect from it!

Good mower, easy transaction, prompt delivery In the height of the lockdown the mower was delivered in a few days. Assembly was straightforward with good, clear instructions. The oil was included - all you needed was unleaded petrol. It started first time and cuts well. The height adjustment is very easy to do and the grass box capacity is just about right. A good mower from a good supplier at a great price. Thanks

Good Easy-to-use Mower Great mower, very simple and easy to use, well built and solid. Delivery was slow, may have been due to the Covid pandemic, but I had no communication of a delay and I had to email and jog them before I got the delivery 10 days after order.
My only criticism is assembly, or more specifically the instructions, the documentation that comes with this mower is very poor and should be reviewed. There is too much focus on safety warnings and very little about assembly and operation, the section on assembly is extremely poor and the manual is very disjointed. I guess it was a translation from another language.
Sort out the documentation and this would be a first class product.

Bang on ???????? Arrived sooner than expected. Fairly easy to assemble (grass box was a little tricky) and easy to start. Not as heavy as my last mower with no drive in it but surprisingly light and easy to guide. Cutting motion provides impetus so much less effort to push required than I had thought might be needed. Coped with long grass and first cut of the year without a hic-cup. Very pleased with this purchase as I had thought of going electric and am so pleased that I did not. A very happy customer.

Quietly Surprised Purchaser Having had an horrendous experience with another well known make and fighting for a refund for three months I decided to go on line to purchase a replacement. Purchased the HP45 that was delivered within three days. Read a few reviews and decided to try and put it together, despite the concerns of other reviews. Absolutely no problems with putting it together and the grass box was a little stiff at first but slotted into place with a bit of lubrication. Would recommend it to anyone. Happy mowing!!

Excellent All Round I think my 5 stars across the board says it all. If Value For Money had been included, that would also have got 5 stars, particularly at MowDirect's price with free delivery as well and the added bonus of a bottle of oil.

Excellent service from MowDirect I would (in fact, will) recommend them and the mower to others.

(Incidentally, I noticed a typo in section 6.5 of the diagrams at the front of the Engines leaflet. The labels 3 and 3a in the two lower diagrams have been transposed).

Good Value Bought this for a neighbour’s gardener. He was very pleased with it. The lawn looked very good after being mowed with this. I put the item together. The only slight problem was with attaching the grass collector, but as the gardener had previously used the same make, he found it easy to complete the assembly.

As a previous reviewer said, they had two screws left over, but apparently, there were two models in production and this one didn’t need them. Phew! What a relief!

Mower has only been used once, as this is a recent purchase.

Very pleased, so far.

Good Quality. Great Service. Bought this mower because of all the good reviews and was a good price. Assembly was good, there were 2 bolts missing but contacted customer service and they sent them out straight away along with the missing oil.

The grass box is a good size. Enough for our garden, you don’t have to keep emptying it after a few minutes so it makes mowing easy. The height adjustments are very to easy to use too. Nothing on this mower is complicated.

Highly recommend this product to anyone.

Excellent Machine This is a well-built machine that starts easily and cuts the grass very well. My only gripe concerns the grass collector. Others on this website have also picked up on this. I couldn't manage to get the soft plastic seam to slot into the lid, so I taped it on with strong tape. Halfway through the first mow, the box came apart and grass spilt everywhere.

I decided to Araldite the seam into the lid. In doing so, the Araldite acted as a sticky oil and allowed me to slide the soft plastic seam further into the slot in the lid, which is obviously how it is meant to be fitted but is impossible without some kind of lubricant. Araldite, will, of course, ensure it stays in place. So I would recommend this technique to others.

The instruction manual could be a little clearer on the initial assembly (But that's a manufacturer issue - not MowDirect's). However, once assembled, oiled and fuelled, it started second pull and cut the lawn beautifully. Over all more than delighted.

Thank you MowDirect for first class service again.

Very Good Mower Got another Mountfield to replace a previous very old Mountfield mower which was as reliable as you could get. Never serviced or cleaned but never a problem with it and a great performance. Started first few pulls every spring.

The new one looks as good and cuts fine. Assembly was easy and as oil was in the box all I had to do was put it in, put in petrol and it started very first pull. New one is a bit lighter and more manoeuvrable and the start requires even less effort. Single lever height adjustment cf 4 separate on the old one is a nice improvement. Delivery was less than 24 hours after ordering on line. Well satisfied.

But would definitely recommend the company and the machine.

Lawnmower Mountfield HP180 Petrol Rotary Hand-Propelled Lawnmower very nice machine. Not so keen on the owner's manual - too small for me. I have still got 2 screws and i have no idea what to do with them. Maybe they are spares.

Mower very good. You do have to make sure that the grass collector is pushed in to the top plastic. Thats a little hard to do and I did not use enough pressure at first so it came apart as I took it off the mower. There are lots of little slots and if the bottom piece is in correctly (it is now) you will see the lip of the bottom bag bit poking through.

Oh yes and one other thing; make sure you have made the right adjustment on the wheels. I did not and had a very short bit of grass, soon raised the wheels and now sorted.

Very Good Mower at a Very Good Price My Flymo petrol mower packed up so I looked for a replacement. The Mountfield mower has a good reputation and MowDirect had one at a very competitive price. It was delivered as promised and I then spent an hour putting it together.

Once unpacked I quickly discarded the instructions (not easy to follow) and used my previous experience to put it together! I then filled it with oil (bottle supplied), added fuel and the mower started first pull.

Excellent Value for Money My 35 year old 14 inch cylinder mower finally gave up the ghost and spent a while deciding whether to transfer to a rotary mower. Replacement cost was the final decider and the SP180 offered an excellent price and fitted my needs.

It was delivered on its due date, easily and quickly assembled, filler with oil and petrol an in use within an hour. The grass was long because of my delay in selecting the mower to purchase, but at the high setting, it cut the grass easily. A second cut on the next lower setting a couple of days later made the grass look very neat and tidy. I

've now used it four of five times and have congratulate myself each time on my excellent choice.

Excellent Mower. Outstanding Value at Sale Price. Excellent mower. Bought to replace a similar sized/styled petrol hover mower that I regretted buying almost immediately about 5 years ago. Did a fair bit of research online at various models and then found this, slightly over my budget but at a sale price of £100 off and it ticked all the boxes required for my ideal mower. And I'm pleased to say it hasn't let me down at all.

First off MowDirect with their ease of ordering and brilliant delivery, a turnaround of 2 days from order to delivery.

The mower itself is a sturdy, robust yet not overly heavy piece of kit. 4 good cutting heights from a one-handle adjustment and solid plastic wheels. Assembly is straightforward and my only real gripe is the assembly of the grass collection bucket....so fiddly and awkward, was very frustrating. Took longer than the mower itself. !!

In short, if you want a quality mower from a quality company at a great price - this is one to seriously consider.

Excellent Petrol Mower at a Very Reasonable Price Just got it and used it for first time yesterday. Excellent! Just what I expected from a Mountfield petrol mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine. My previous mower was also a Mountfield with a Briggs & Stratton engine, which lasted me 20 years!. This one looks and feels like it is just as good, maybe even better.

Assembly was straightforward, easy to follow instructions, apart from one thing, which I have to say was frustrating - the grass collector is not as simple to assemble as the instructions suggest. It says the two parts click together, but they don't. You really have to push the flexible netting "bag" into the grooves of the "hard" part very firmly all the way round, otherwise the bag falls off with the weight of the grass being collected. This happened two or three times before I realised how tight I needed to press the two parts together. My previous mower had a one-piece "hard" grass collector. I don't know why they changed that feature. However, that is the only down side I have come across and, since it is an assembly problem rather than operational problem, I would not let it detract from the overall quality of the product.

I look forward to the next 20 years of mowing!!

Purchase went smoothly. I was Informed all the way through the delivery chain right up to the hour it was delivered. I was also given options to rearrange delivery if required.

I'm a mower 'noob' and after getting fed up with the Flymo I thought I'd enter the refined hydrocarbon world.

The mower came in a box which included a free bottle of oil! I was expecting to have to run to the shop so that was a nice surprise. 20 minutes to assemble and I can now mow my front and back lawn in 20 minutes. Job Jobbed. I probably could have got away with a smaller mower but bigger is usually better.

Recommend MowDirect and this mower.

A Cutting Edge Machine Very pleased with my new value-for-money mower. The solid red livery and Mountfield badge confers a certain one-upmanship I find, and this is admirably complimented by the incomparable Briggs & Stratton power source delivering an impressive 145 cc. And no I'm not being paid to write this, but I wish I was.

The generously wide cutting edge is a mouth-watering 45cms and the smoothness of operation, given that muggins is in fact pushing it, is awe inspiring. It is less than noisy which is a bonus for the neighbours.

Seriously, this is an excellent machine, and I'm thoroughly delighted with it. Back up service from MowDirect has been great too. I think the bag could be more robust but will see how well it lasts. Enjoy.

A Proper Mower Sick to death of plastic electric so-called mowers that wear out within a year or two and can't handle a bit of rough? Get one of these! Solid & more grunt than a big grunty thing with knobs on!

Great bit of kit and, once the warranty runs out, it'll happily run on any engine oil you have spare.

Quality Product at a Great Price Point Easy to assemble, it is apparent straight away that this is a well-made mower that's built to last. Good paint finish, everything lines up well on assembly too. It takes half the oil supplied, so it's good that there is sufficient to change oil as suggested after 5 hours use.

Difficult to pull cord at first, it was locked solid. By turning the blade by hand to free up and get oil to circulate this did free-up the starting cord, then first pull - it started.*

Great cut and finish, easy to turn, not overly noisy. It really is a pleasure to use. One great feature is the grass box design, the mower really packs the grass cuttings tight and it is easy to remove and replace. Height adjustment lifts all four wheels. Not many settings but the second lowest seemed to give a great look to grass. Very pleased and a steal at £199.

* (Editor's Comment - 'Do make sure you are wearing a good pair of work or gardening gloves if you are going to do this.')

Pleased Enough I ordered this mower because (as previous reviewer Ron Wright's had) my old Emblem lasted for 29 years. By then it had become an old friend. I make no bones about saying I bought a Mountfield for that reason alone.

This one came with no oil. I must have missed the statement where it said it came with no oil or wasn't there one? Still I had some motor bike SAE 30 that suited. I don't think that this engine will be stressed like a ZZR but never mind. The instructions were a little complicated being in 28 languages and the info you needed was scattered about.

Eventually it started very easily with a pleasant 1950's bike style "Duff, duff, duff", It is a LOT quieter than my old Emblem. Starts easier. A bit less of a beast with no throttle at all.

What is this thing where you have to have a "Dead mans handle" to keep the engine running ? I have a lot of things to move about when I cut the grass and I have to allow the mower to stop every time I want to shift them. Very annoying. Still I have sorted that out by having a hook on the handle which keeps the motor running.

Cuts neatly but does not pick up the grass anywhere near as well as the old one. I agree about the statement about the flimsy handles.

One final point. I checked my Emblem's oil every year but never changed it, I cleaned the air filter once and it gave half a lifetimes work. So much for having your mower regularly serviced.

The Mowdirect service was superb.

Very Pleased I ordered this product after my previous Mountfield (Emblem 15"), that I had used for twenty years, sustained a fatigue fracture on the rear wheel bracket and the wheel and stub axle fell off. The part was obsolete so, unable to repair it, I purchased this model which was on special offer.

It arrived two days after ordering it on line, though the delivery company did email me saying it would be a PM delivery and it arrived 11am (fortunately my wife was in to sign for it).

Setting it up was relatively easy though, just remember to disconnect the spark plug and pull the start/stop bar once the handle assembly is set up, in order to get the pull cord into its locating hook on the stem of the push bar. It will not pull out from its recoiled position unless this is done!

Filling it with oil was easy and as other have said it started first pull. It's quieter than my old one and was easy to manoeuvre. Not sure whether the handles will last the twenty years my old one did, as the machine is heavier and the tubing seems a little lightweight but I may be wrong. Still very pleased with my purchase and used it three times now.

Easy to Start and Use. A Good Cut. I bought this to supplement a ride-on for use in difficult corners, around stepping stones, etc. It was not too difficult to assemble, once I had worked out that the lower handle sections needed a lot of force to get them properly seated.

The oil filler/dipstick is difficult to access and I had to modify a funnel to go in at an angle. Oil was supplied - thanks MowDirect - despite the notice on the box saying it was not.

It then started with the first quite gentle pull on the starter cord, ran smoothly and did exactly what I wanted of it, so A VERY SATISFACTORY PURCHASE.

Very Good Product I bought this because I was fed up struggling with a small, under-powered, electric mower on a fairly large garden with a lot of rough grass and weeds.

Although I've only used it once so far, it didn't disappoint. It did the job in a fraction of the time and with a much better quality of cut. It was easy to start and to use.

It's heavier than the electric mower, so not as manoeuvrable, but that's what I expected so no complaints there. Overall I'm very happy with it.

Excellent mower I ordered this on line in the afternoon and it was delivered just after lunch the following day.

Assembly was simple with only 4 bolts with large wing-nuts and the recoil rope guide to tighten up. Oh and a plastic plug to fit in the rear flap. The grass box was even simpler to put together with the collector just clipping to the frame. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

The one thing I did struggle to find was how much oil to put in the engine, you need to look through the engine spec to find this, I thought it would have been better to have the information in the instruction manual. Anyway I was cutting the grass after 20 minutes of taking the mower out of the box so no real issues .

The mower itself is very good quality with a Briggs and Stratton engine which is a larger capacity, and with more power, than most manufacturers seem to fit to this size of mower.

Height adjustment is via a lever which adjusts all 4 wheels together. The cutting deck is steel which should last many years if coated with a light oil over winter .

The real clincher though was the price, £200, excellent buy for a quality mower from a branded manufacturer.

Great basic mower. This reminds me of an excellent mower I had several years ago. Could it be old stock being sold off? If so, buy one quickly! It has the same motor as my previous plasticky rubbish from one of the large DIY stores but is much much more powerful.

It cut very long damp meadow grass with ease. It's fairly quiet & starts easily. Assembly was straightforward, just 1 bolt missing. There were scratches on the casing showing that it had been assembled before, maybe it was an ex-demo model?

Good price and fair value The product shipped and arrived promptly and was well packaged. I was replacing a Makita which after several seasons of hard work had finally died.

Assembly was relatively straightforward, although I did find it difficult to assemble the grass collection box - a call to Mountfield confirmed that brute force with a screwdriver was needed and that did work.

I don't find that it mows quite as well as the Makita, and the cuttings bag doesn't seem to have the same capacity (though similarly rated) but overall it is working fine.

V happy with MowDirect, v unhappy with the Mountfield HP 180 mower The Mountfield HP180 mower I ordered was delivered very quickly considering I live in a remote part of the West Highlands, so full marks to MowDirect.

My concern is with the quality of the mower. I used Mountfield mowers for years as a lock-keeper on the Crinan Canal till the 1990s and their quality was high. I must say that the mock-rubber wheels on the new one are rubbish and one of them has broken on the first outing. On the website the wheels looked to me like they used to be rubber and strong not thin cheap plastic. Very disappointing and doesn't bode well for the future.

At just under £200 pounds I expected/hoped a mower that would last a few years. Doesn't seem likely, unfortunately.

I will be complaining to the contact number on the machine. Mountfield seem to have gone the way of most companies and sacrificed quality for quick profit. Not a good way to keep their reputation.

Very good value for money This was bought to replace a similar mower (Husqvarna) with the same Briggs & Stratton engine. This mower had seen many years service. The Mountfield is a slightly lighter build but I would still anticipate it giving us at least 10 years service.

It starts very well and coped adequately with some moderately long, slightly damp grass. The grass box is easy to handle. There didn't seem to be much, if any, throttle control.

Overall very pleased with the quality of the mower for the price. Assembly will take 30 - 45 minutes.

We were annoyed to find that having assembled the mower there was a hole in the petrol tank due to a manufacturing fault. I suspect that this was a one off rather than a problem with Mountfield generally.

The replacement was delivered on XDP Express, with a heap of items rolling about in the back of the vehicle, one of which fell out onto the road. The delivery was late, came in a very battered box, and the driver had no instructions to take away the faulty mower or any labels.

Having said that we are pleased with the Mountfield and MowDirect had the best price available.

The grass collector was difficult to assemble, so would be better to have more done prior to receipt.
It does need effort when mowing the lawns as this is not a "power" driven mower which my previous one was. All that said, for the money paid with the discount, you get what you pay for.

Came on time. Out of the box, easy to assemble. I topped up with oil and petrol, a few pushes on the primer and engine started straight away. Then high cut of my very long lawn. No problems.
If there is one thing about the mower, the revs between tickover and max controlled by the throttle lever are not that obvious, but still a good machine so far. My old one was a hand me down, and I had that for 7 years. Lets see how this one does.

MowDirect were indeed as good as the reviews say and I would place every confidence in them.
DANGER: when cleaning before storage do not tip the machine towards you until completely cool - petrol floods out. The instruction summary does not even mention this possibility which although maybe obvious to some, it was not to me until too late.

Ensure you have purchased oil and petrol before receiving the product and be prepared for a bit of fiddling to put it together, it takes about 20 minutes. I also brought a stiff brush to clean the machine after use, as a fair bit of grass sticks to the underside under a crossbar for some reason.

It is a special offer apparently...We will see how it performs.

I have to say the assembly is reasonably ok apart from the collector which needs quite a bit of thought as the instructions are useless. I have two redundant screws which although supplied, I can't see why they are needed. This is always a problem that might make me lose some sleep.
The grass collector is the most interesting part that needs to be assembled and I can see why. It would cost too many man/lady hours in the factory!
However, it looks every penny's worth and it must be great value if it works.
By the way, I reckon the paint job was done by an ex Ferrari employee.

Great Mower, good price Purchased this to replace a 20yr old McCulloch which died. This mower has made a great job of my lawns even coping with some uneven surfaces and thick tussocks of grass. It is lightweight (compared to my last one) and easy to control and manoeuvre. Starts first time and comes with a mulching attachment. Grass collection is good and is packed into the grass box very tightly. My only issue is that the box is a soft netting construction and when trying to empty it the box concertinas which slows down the emptying process. My last box had a hard casing so this new one might take some getting used to. Overall I'm very pleased with the results shown on my lawns.

A good value, high performing, lightweight large push mower The mower was easy to assemble and the grass collector took a couple of goes to line up the mesh equally - you have to remove and refit two existing screws, one each side at the front of the box in order to fit the mesh right up to the front edge. This is easy enough, but not mentioned in the instructions.
The build quality is not perhaps as sturdy as my old Mountfield, and certainly not in the same class as a Honda, but the HP180 makes up for this by performing splendidly.
The 55 ltr plastic/mesh grass box is huge and when I emptied it I was pleased to find it packed solidly with grass.
Another great feature is the single lever, five-position, cutting height adjustment. I selected position *2* for a close cut on an uneven lawn.
This machine is great value for the money and is probably the largest hand-propelled rotary mower you can buy - mowers in this range (18" cutting width) are nearly all self-propelled.
In summary it is easy to start, easy to push by hand, easy to manoeuvre, easy to adjust and above all, collects a huge amount of grass!
