Good Value for Money Scarifier
Ordering and delivery first class.
The machine arrives boxed, so a certain amount of assembly is required, which is fairly straight forward. The only slight difficulty was fitting the cable clips to the frame; they take quite a force to open up so not a job for arthritic hands!
The machine was put to use immediately after assembly. It certainly has the power and ability to scarify properly. As others have noted the collection box is of little use as this machine really removes the moss and thatch quickly, and it is amazing how much is produced. We found that the best way of collecting the detritus was to rake it in to piles and, after removing it to the compost bin, going over the lawn with a rotary mower to pick up anything left. The end result was as good as using a heavy duty petrol scarifier.
I used an electric 'so called' scarifier years ago that really only scratched the surface and wasn't up to the job. This machine is a very different proposition and its lightness and size make it manageable for most people to get a good result from. It appears to be quite solidly made.
The only negative point I can say about this product is the way the electric cable is connected to the machine. The illustrations on the box and in the manual show a cable connector between the switch on the handle and the cable itself, which can be disconnected for moving the machine around and for storage. That also allows the cable to be repaired easily if and when it is damaged. On my machine and presumably all UK machines, the long cable is wired directly into the operating switch, which I find a bit of a pain when moving and storing the machine, and the obvious complication of wiring a new cable into the switch when damaged. All my other electrically operated garden machines use the plug and socket system, and however careful one is to avoid cutting into one's cable, it is so much easier to mend and replace the cable off the device than it it were permanently connected. So when the warranty expires, I shall be fitting a two pin plug and socket just below the operating switch.
I have not used the aerator blades and so cannot comment on their performance. As in this mode the tines are just scratching the surface, I imagine that the machine has more than enough performance to carry out this task.
For the price I would thoroughly recommend this product.
