Chainsaw Chain
Choose Your Chain
To work out the pitch of a chainsaw chain you need the measure the distance between the centre of any three consecutive rivets on the side of the chain and divide this by two. The measurement needs to be calculated in inches and will be either 1/4", 3/8", .325" or .404". Alternatively you may find this information stamped on the side of the chain or guide bar. If you have your manual to hand, you'll find the information in there too.
Chainsaw Chain with 1/4" Pitch
If your saw chain has 1/4" pitch you should find that the gauge is .050" or 1.3mm. (You'll need to check your manual to confirm this if you are not sure.) Saw chain with 1/4" pitch and .050" gauge is used on smaller saws of the type normally employed by wood carvers and arborists and offers high levels of manoeuvrability.
