Battery power makes essential gardening jobs less tiring – and no petrol fumes

Battery power has gone a long way in the last ten years or so and is starting to revolutionise garden machinery.

It’s possible that in years to come the trip to the garage with a petrol can will become a thing of the past as technology improves – there is even a ride-on lawn tractor powered by the latest lithium ion batteries and in the States HGV lorries are even pulled by electrical power.

Here are three pieces of equipment which we helped to develop which use this technology and which we helped to develop to ensure they were the right specification for British gardens.

The Redback E137CQ-2Ah Cordless Lawnmower runs on 40V batteries which hold their power and will recharge in 70 minutes.

The mower has a cutting width of 37cm making it suitable for lawns around 400m2.

Ideal for inner-city, urban use they are far quieter than petrol-powered ones and far more pleasant to use as there are not smelly emissions.

It has a 40-litre grass box and five cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm and is light and easy to push along.

A dial on the handlebar shows how much charge is in the batteries so you’ll know if you have enough power to finish the job before you set out.

It costs £299 and that includes the mower itself, charger and battery.

We deliver it free within seven days and it has a three-year maker’s warranty.

A recent customer wrote: ‘No Complaints. Excellent price, well made and does what it says on the tin. Can’t fault it.’

Hedges are also easier to trim using cordless technology and this one is from the same company.

The Redback E522D Cordless Hedgetrimmer will run off the same battery as the previous lawnmower with all the advantages of lithium ion power and is a light and easy cutter to use.

So you won’t need to buy another battery or charger.

The cutter has 56cm double-reciprocating blades with the power to tackle thicker growth and a rotating rear handle so you can deal with awkward corners and odd shapes.

It costs £89, £10 below the recommended price and is delivered free within seven days with a three-year warranty.

For this, you will need a power belt to hold the battery which costs £39.

And for hedge tops, always difficult to trim, this machine is the answer, the Redback E920D Cordless Pole-Hedgetrimmer.

Using the same battery and charger it has a telescopic shaft and an adjustable and the cutter bar rotates through 90 degrees.

The blades are 52cm long and a shoulder harness makes it less tiring to use.

The battery and motor provide an excellent counterbalance to help make using it easier.

The recommended price is £149 but we have it for sale for £119 with a three-year warranty and free delivery within seven days.

But remember this is for the tool only.

These are just three of the pieces of equipment within the Redback range all using the same battery make them really economical.

One customer reported: ‘Exceeded my Expectations. I bought this in February this year and now, having given it a lot of use I can now say it is brilliant!’
