Top mowers for the small to medium sized lawn, plus a robot to do the work for you

Hayter Spirit 41 lawnmower

Most gardeners don’t want a big mower made to deal with acres of grass.

Most of us want a simple mower, easy to start and use which will give our lawns front and back a neat, cared-for appearance.

So this week’s top ten will feature mowers made for lawns under 1000m2. All are from industry leaders, some are exclusive and some are new for this season.

But all offer excellent value for money and free delivery the next working day.

The first is one of the new ones for this year and is made by top German company Al-Ko.

Really solidly built, the Al-Ko Easy 4.2 PS Petrol Push Lawnmower is for lawns up to 800m2 and has seven cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm.

Cut grass is collected in the 50-litre grass box or can be discharged at the back where appearance is not vital. The cutting width is 42cm.

As this is a mower which you push along it is easier to cut curving lawns and along path edges.

Powering the cutting blade is a 99cc Al-Ko engine developing 2hp.

It costs £189, £40 less than the recommended price and it has a five-year warranty.

And we deliver it free the next working day.

This one is from a favourite British garden machinery company and is exclusive to MowDirect.

The tried and trusted Mountfield HP180 Petrol Rotary Hand-Propelled Lawnmower has a Briggs & Stratton 125cc engine, mean on fuel and easy to start.

The cutting width is 45cm so it is suitable for lawns around 800m2 and it is easy to push along thanks to large rear wheels and it weighs only 25kg.

The grass box holds 55 litres and it has five cutting heights from 20mm to 70mm.

The recommended price is £299 but we have it for sale for £199 including free delivery within two to three working days and a two-year warranty.

One recent purchaser said: ‘First Class. A very good machine which was assembled in about thirty minutes, though very little assembly was required. This is a particularly fine product at a low purchase price. Fuel up, and off you go. It fired on the first pull and on the second pull it started.

The next one is an another exclusive and packed with features you only usually get on more expensive mowers.

The MowMaster 43PD 3-in-1 Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower is a self-propelled machine with a 43cm cutting width and made with lawns around 600m2 in mind.

This lets you collect the cut grass – there is a 40-litre grass box, mulch them or discharge from the back. The grass box has an indicator to show when it is full.

There are five cutting heights from 25mm to 70mm and the 123cc engine has plenty of power to tackling rougher areas of grass and sloping lawns.

It has a steel cutting deck with a wash port to make it easier to clean after use – just attach a garden hose to the special inlet and run the engine briefly.

It costs £219, is delivered free the next working day and has a two-year warranty.

One customer commented: ‘Excellent. The machine is excellent, easy to start, has dealt well with thick grass on our allotment, and the powered rear wheels make the uphill sections much easier. The cavernous grass collector is also much appreciated. Great price.’

The next is from another top German manufacturer.

The Einhell GC-PM 46 S-M Self-Propelled 4-Wheeled Petrol Lawnmower has a steel cutting deck and is a very solid mower with the company’s own 139cc engine.

It has a cutting width of 46cm and is suitable for areas up to 1400m2 and has nine cutting heights from 30mm to 80mm.

A large 50-litre grass box means less time lost emptying the cuttings on to the compost heap but you can also mulch the clippings if you prefer as there is an easily fitted mulch plug.

It costs £219.95, £80 less than the recommended price and we deliver it free of charge within two to three working days. Plus there is a two-year warranty.

One recent customer said: ‘Good Mower. My first petrol mower and really impressed with its performance. Handled our garden – approx 400 square metres which had been left to its own devices by the previous owner, with no issues.’

Now another exclusive mower from Europe, the Oleo-Mac G48-TK Comfort-Plus Petrol Self-Propelled Lawn Mower.

From Italy, it has a 46cm cutting width making it suitable for lawns around 800m2 and is powered along by a 140cc Emak engine.

There are cutting heights from 28mm to 75mm and a large 60-litre grass box. If you prefer to mulch the cut grass, a mulching plug can be bought for another £20.

It is easy to start with the starting cord mounted on the handlebars.

It costs £269.95, £130 off the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a five-year warranty.

There is a string of reviews for this mower. One said: ‘Good Value Mower with Excellent Features. This is a fairly well-constructed mower, with good features and a pleasing finish. Assembly took a little longer than I thought it would but all becomes clearer the longer you persist. There are a number of nice touches that lift this machine above others in the market.’

Now another exclusive machine from a range which we helped to develop using the latest battery technology.

The Redback E137CQ-2Ah Cordless Lawnmower uses 40V lithium-ion batteries which will not discharge spontaneously and can be fully charged in 70 minutes.

With a cutting width of 37cm, it is suitable for lawns up to 400m2.

It has a 40-litre grass box and five cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm and a handlebar display shows the charge level in the batteries.

It is also very light and easy to use and is ideal for a smaller lawn.

It costs £299 compared with the recommended price of £397 and that includes the battery and charger.

And this battery fits other machinery in the Redback range so in future you only have the by the tool making it much cheaper.

It is delivered free within seven days and has a three-year warranty.

One customer summed it up like this: ‘No Complaints. Excellent price, well made and does what it says on the tin. Can’t fault it.’

Now a mower from a tried and trusted British company with a long history of making top quality mowers.

The Hayter Spirit 41 Petrol Push Rear-Roller Lawnmower (Code: 617J) has a 41cm cutting width making it the one for lawns around 400m2 where you want a traditional striped finish.

It has a full-ribbed rear roller to provide this and is powered by a Briggs & Stratton 125cc engine.

And being a mower with a rear roller you can use it to cut right up to the lawn edge without it falling into the rose bushes.

It has a 55-litre grass box and fins at the front of the mower smooth the grass before it is cut leading to a more even finish.

There are seven cutting heights right down to 13mm and it is fitted with a cutter bar friction down to protect the engine in case of a sudden and violent collision with a solid object.

The cutting deck is lined with plastic to resist corrosion and dampen the noise.

It costs £339, £60 less than the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a free bottle of engine oil to get you started straight away. There is a three-year warranty.

A Good Product with a Speedy Delivery,’ said a recent purchaser. ‘The mower was easy to assemble and prepare for use. Amazingly, it started the first time and was very easy and comfortable to use. The striped finish to the lawn was reasonable. Subsequent uses have been just as successful.

And our final mower in this selection is an absolute class from a British company which manufactures mowers for sports pitches and country-house lawns.

The Allett Classic 14L Petrol Cylinder Lawn Mower uses a cutting action which traps the grass between revolving blades and one fixed at the bases to give a very neat trim.

An 87cc engine propels the mower and turns the cutting cassette and the rear roller gives a perfect, striped finished.

Made for smaller lawns around 150m2 it has a narrow 35cm cutting width – 14in – and has cutting heights right down to 9mm.

The handlebars have three positions to suit the height of the user and the grass box holds 32 litres.

As an optional extra you can buy a scarifying cassette to ease out dead grass and other debris and keep the lawn looking perfect.

The mower costs £699, £60 less than the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a one-year warranty.

One customer summed it up like this: ‘Excellent Product. Does exactly what it says on the tin! Had my last one for over 20 years and this one looks and feels even better.’

We couldn’t forget those of you with larger lawns so here is a neat little ride-on for areas up to 2000m2.

The Lawnflite Mini Rider 60RDE Ride-On Mower is made for lawns a little too small for a garden tractor but would take too much of our leisure time using a conventional lawnmower.

A Briggs & Stratton 190cc engine powers it along and shift-on-the-go gears make it easy to drive.

It has been designed so you can either collect the cut grass, mulch it or discharge, but you will need to buy a mulch kit and rear deflector.

There are five cutting heights from 38mm to 95mm and a grass box which holds 150 litres.

The cutting width is 60cm and it has a tight turning circle making it ideal for gardens with small paths and curving borders.

An adjustable seat and step-through designed to make it very easy to drive for the less agile.

It costs £1349, £250 off the recommended price and we deliver it free within two to three working days with a two-year warranty.

One recent reviewer wrote: ‘Delivery good by MowDirect company. The machine is spot on, brilliant, cuts grass no problem as I have over 1-acre field. It saves time compared to a than a self-propelled walk-behind mower. It starts first time, even though it had been left over the winter in an open shed it started first time this season. Fun playing with the machine and the cheapest on internet.’

‘Recommended to buy this ride on mower.’

Finally, a machine which makes mowing the lawn as easy as sitting in a deckchair.

The Al-Ko Robolinho 100 Robotic Lawn Mower comes from the German manufacturing and engineering company we mentioned earlier and works within perimeter wires set into the lawn.

Once the wires are laid the mower will trundle along happily mulching the grass as it goes. It can run for 70 minutes on a single charge and will work its way around obstacles thanks to its obstacle sensor.

Supplying the oomph is a latest-generation 18v (1.5Ah) battery that offers a run-time of around 70-minutes on a single charge; and which utilises cutting-edge lithium-ion technology for fade-free power and cycle upon cycle of unfailing performance.

There are seven cutting heights from 30mm to 60mm and it can tackle slopes up to 35 degrees.

Thanks to its seven-step cutting-height range (30-60mm), the Robolinho 100 can be set-up to suit the grass-length facing it on any given day.

It costs £1399, £300 off the recommended price and it is delivered within two to three working days with a two-year warranty.

You can see a wide selection of mowers here and ride-ons and garden tractors here.

With summer arriving in a few days’ time, now is the time to make the most of your garden, cut the lawn once a week at least once a week and keep the hoe moving in the flowers beds.

And after that, you can relax in a deck chair with a glass of something cooling.
