Ten top machines to trim lawn edges, the thickest of scrub and banks of weeds

MD Tondu Wheeled Trimmer

Verges and areas of longer grass and scrub have grown a-pace recently after a good soaking and warming sun and are threatening to get out of hand.

Nettles have started growing as well as the white heads of cow parsley and you need to trim this growth back now before it overwhelms the garden and becomes a serious chore to keep in check.

So here are ten tools made to trim back these areas, all at the keenest prices so you can keep control of the wilder areas of your garden.

The first is the Einhell GH-BC Petrol Brushcutter which has a free kit of safety and other equipment with it making it an especially good buy.

The power is from a 25cc engine, easy to start in any conditions.

And it has both a nylon strimming head for lawn edges and straggling, thinner grass, and a 23cm metal cutting blade for the rougher areas of weeds and undergrowth.

It also has a shoulder harness making it more comfortable to work for longer periods.

The strimming head has a bump feed feature, so all you have to do is tap it on the ground to feed out new line.

The free kit consists of a free helmet with face guard and ear defenders, working gloves and a free fuel mixing bottle.

The recommended price is £199.95 but we have it for sale for £129.95 with free delivery the next working day and a two-year warranty.

One customer commented:’ Excellent. Fantastic strimmer especially for the price. Lots of power and easy to store as it folds away. Fantastic service too.’

This next one is from the same leading German engineering company and the type preferred by professional gardeners.

The Einhell GE-BC 33 AS Low-Vibration Brushcutter has a double-bearing crankshaft and triple rubber shock absorbers to keep vibrations to a minimum so that it is more comfortable to use for longer periods.

The 32.6cc engine has Einhell’s Easy-Start system with an automatic choke and simple primer and has a blade with tthree mean teeth as well as a strimming head.

These two heads are very easy to change over.

The shaft is made from aluminium and is split making it easy to transport and store.

It costs £169.95, a huge reduction on the recommended price of £349.95 and is delivered free of charge the next working day with a two-year warranty.

A recent customer’s comment was: ‘Great Value – Well Built. I have just returned from a trip to Scotland where this machine was first used. Putting it together was straightforward and nothing was missing. We (my wife, a slim 64-year old!) used it to clear several months of tough reed and grass using the nylon strimmer. The weight didn’t pose any problems and it started exactly as the instructions indicated. I have no hesitation in recommending this.’

The next one is from an Italian company and is an extremely light machine.

The Oleo-Mac BC240S Ultralight Petrol Brushcutter has a 21.7cc engine with an engine designed for heavy use with an integral choke and an electronically-controlled coil to give great fuel use figures.

It weighs only 4.5kg and has a loop handle making it easier to trim in confined spaces like behind garden sheds.

It has a strimming head and a 25.5cm cutting blade – the strimming head is very easy to load with new line.

With this machine, there is a free face shield and free spare trimming line worth together £15.

It costs £249.95, £100 off the recommended price and we deliver it free the next working day.

Now three machines relying on battery power, and the first is the Cobra GT30-24V Cordless Grass-Trimmer.

It has a 24V Samsung lithium-ion battery with a run time of 30 minutes and can be recharged in two hours.

It weighs only 2.4kg and has a loop handle and twin speeds to get the most out of the battery. The cutting width is 30cm.

A great feature is the cutting head which pivots and rotates through 90 degrees so you can cut lawn sides as well as edges to give an even neater finish.

One customer commented ’Great Product. I bought this product not knowing if it was up to the job. I was pleasantly surprised.

‘It’s lightweight and easy to use. Being battery powered, I didn’t think it would be very powerful but it works really well and strims the garden in no time. It’s really easy to replace the trimming line as well.

It’s worth spending the money on a decent grass trimmer rather than the cheap ones that aren’t up to the job. And no electric line to get in the way.

‘Great product. Would definitely recommend.’

It costs £74.99 including battery and charger and is delivered free of charge within seven to ten working days.

Plus there is a two-year warranty.

The Redback E312DQ-2Ah Cordless Grass-Trimmer has a 2Ah lithium-ion battery pack and has a tilting cutter head which also rotates through 90 degrees so it can be used as a wheeled lawn edger as well.

This is a really well-balanced machine with an adjustable aluminium shaft to keep the weight down and give it a long life.

More line can be spooled out by tapping the head on the ground and it is fitted with a crop protector which saves you from strimming through the roses.

The package includes a 2Ah battery, charger and a power belt and it costs £239, £42 off the recommended price.

Delivery is free within seven working days and it has a three-year warranty.

And this exclusive and smart-looking machine is aimed at professional gardeners.

The Zomax DG511 58v Cordless Grass-Trimmer (Tool Only) has a 58V battery with a 40-minute run time and has a 31cm cutting width with a bump feed system to feed out new line.

It also has a plant protector to save flowers and crops from an unwanted haircut.

It has been designed to keep noise and vibration levels to a minimum and has a hanging hook to make it easy to store.

The recommended price is £149 but we have it for sale for £99 with free delivery to the working day and a two-year warranty.

Now four machines for thicker areas or scrub and banks of weeds.

First is our own little wheeled-trimmer, light and easy to use to trim down neglected areas infested with weeds.

The MD Tondu Wheeled Trimmer Mower has a 160cc 4-stroke engine to drive a trimming head with a flat nose so it can get under garden benches and low branches and can cut close to fence and wall edges.

This is a very rugged little machine which can also be used on ditch banks and roadside verges.

And as it has thick nylon trimming line there is no risk of damage if you hit stones or discarded tins.

It has a working width of 56cm and cutting heights from 35mm to 70mm. Folding handlebars make it easy to transport and store.

It costs £319, £40 off the recommended price and is delivered free within seven days with five sets of trimming line. Ten other sets can be bought for £20.

It has a two-year warranty.

This has been a best-seller for some years. A recent reviewer wrote: ‘Nettles Brambles Thistles All Gone. I cleared 2 paddock areas of rough grass, just over 700 sq metres of 5ft high nettles brambles thistles and more. This machines made light work of a daunting task. Highly recommended.’

This next one can be used by professional for clearing really large areas of thick vegetation.

The Efco DR51-VB6 Wheeled Brushcutter will rip through brambles and gorse with ease and has a 190cc Briggs & Stratton engine with a variable-speed gearbox.

The front dolly wheel means it is very easy to manoeuvre and turn and with its 51cm working width it is recommended for large areas – say around 2000m2.

It costs £1249, £120 off the recommended price and is delivered free within three to five working days. And it has a three-year warranty.

One purchaser wrote: ‘Great Machine, Superb Build Quality/Value. We bought this for rushes and rough terrain and, it has been 1st class.

‘It’s well built, with easy start and assembly, heavy duty in all aspects and it certainly deals with rushes/reeds and rough terrain. The drive wheels are very good, and all the controls being to hand means you can change height and drive speed so easily as the terrain changes.’

And finally a beast of a machine made for the thickest and most neglect areas.

The DR PRO 26-14.5 Field & Brush Mower – Electric Start (DRMP27) has a Briggs & Stratton engine and has the power to cut down small trees up to 60cm in diameter.

There are  four forward gears and a reverse gear – always handy for rough ground and a diff lock to give better traction when needed.

DR Pro Field and Brush Mower

Professional Power: DR Pro Field and Brush Mower

The cutting deck has a width of 66cm and will pivot to cope with uneven ground. Wide profile tyres will help with this as well and a blade-brake clutch is another useful feature.

It costs £2999, £300 less than the recommended price and is delivered free within five days with a two-year warranty.

These are just ten of the machines on our site designed for every task from lawn edging to cutting back the thickest undergrowth – the days of swinging a heavy garden scythe are long gone, thank goodness.
