Let your grass draw breath – ten top scarifiers for a perfect verdant spring lawn

Despite sorry-looking grass with long straggly growth, weeds and moss and the general rubbish of winter on the surface, lawns are doing their best to start to grow.

But they need a bit of help to ease them from their winter lethargy and let them breathe and flourish.

Scarifying will ease out the moss and debris from the surface and allow moisture and nutrients to penetrate to the roots so that Spring growth can flourish.

So here are ten top scarifiers to do the trick and let your lawns breathe more easily and grow more vigorously.

Don’t be worried if the lawn looks a bit like a recently-ploughed field after scarifying – that’s all the debris teased out which was prohibiting new growth.

With a matter of days, the lawns will be back to their best, healthier and better. For best results, lawns need to be scarified every few weeks through the year to keep them looking their best; and leave off the debris collector the first time you do this and use a rake to clear the rubbish.

The first is a best-selling superstar, amazing value for money and a versatile hard-working machine.

The Einhell GC-SC 2240P Petrol Lawn Scarifier is from a major German manufacturer and suitable for lawns around 1000m2.

It has 18 steel blades designed to tease out moss and weeds and other lawn debris which are driven by a 118cc engine.

There are six working heights, but don’t be too severe you first you the scarifier – you can always lower the height a little for the next treatment.

It has a 40cm working width and large wheels which make it easy to manoeuvre and the handles fold down for easy transport – you’ll be surprised at how many requests you receive to borrow it!

This exclusive scarifier has been the recipient of a multitude of five-star reviews. ‘Prompt delivery. Excellent product at a good price. Easy to assemble and use.’ That was one customer’s opinion. ‘Brilliant Scarifier! My partner describes this scarifier as the best he has ever owned’ is another. – Other reviews are here.

It costs £279.95, £220 off the recommended price and we deliver it free within three to five working days with a two-year warranty.

This one, too, is from the same company but has an electric motor for the power and uses the latest battery technology.

The Einhell GE-SC 35LI Power X-Change Cordless Scarifier Tool Only) has an 18V motor to drive 16 steel blades to ease out the rubbish and has a plastic housing which not only keeps down the weight and resists corrosion and is easy to clean.

It has three working-depths and large wheels to make it easy to move around and won’t damage the lawn surface.

You can buy a debris collection bag and an aerator roller as extras.

Complete with charger and batteries, it costs £189.95 compared with the recommended price of £249.95. We deliver it free the next working day with a two-year warranty.

And remember the battery is compatible with other equipment in the Einhell Power X-Change range.

Here’s one from a UK manufacturer.

The Cobra S36E Electric Scarifier has a 1800W motor and has been designed to scarify the lawn and aerate it at the same time.

The aeration relieves compacted soil and lets moisture penetrate to the roots more easily.

It has four settings from -10mm to -5mm and has a 40-litre catcher for the debris and comes complete with a 10-metre power cable.

It has a working width of 36cm and weighs only 21.3kg and is ideal for small to medium-sized lawns.

The price is £149.99, £10 off the recommended price and we deliver it free the next working day with a two-year warranty.

Here’s another machine from a top German maker which has proved to be a best seller with a string of good reviews.

The Al-Ko Comfort 38E Combi-Care Electric Aerator / Scarifier has two easily-fitted cassettes. The first has 14 steel blades to cut small slits into the lawn to allow water to be through to the roots.

The second has 24 sprung steel hooks to tease out moss and other rubbish which could stop growth.

A 1300W electric motor drives these two cassettes which have five working depths selected with a neat little dial. It is supplied with a 55-litre catcher.

And it has a smooth underside making it very easy to clean and stops rubbish from being dragged across the garden.

It costs £169, £20 off the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a two-year warranty.

One customer commented ‘Although a more expensive bit of kit it is well worth the extra money. The scarifying cylinders are heavy duty and well made; the machine is highly effective on even extremely thickly thatched grass. If you have a very small lawn you may well get by with something cheaper, but for a lawn of any size this machine does the business.’

Hayter has a justified reputation for making top quality mowers and this scarifier is out of the same mould.

The Hayter SP36 Petrol Lawn Scarifier (110J) has a 155cc Briggs & Stratton engine, quiet and reliable with a 36cm working width and five working depths.

It has been designed with a transport wheel to make it easy to move over paths without damaging the blades.

A dead man’s handle stops the blades when it is released, a useful safety device, and the machine is built around a steel deck to give it great strength.

Handlebars fold down when not in use to take less storage space in the shed.

We deliver it free within two to three working days with a free bottle of oil and a one-year warranty.

It costs £499, £100 off the recommended price and it has a one-year warranty.

Great bit of gear, tears up the moss no end! For the money it’s great. Not too much of a problem with it not being self-driven either. It’s very light so easy to push around,’ says one customer.

We’re now getting into some serious machines suitable for larger gardens and professional use.

The Weibang Intrepid 384RB Pro Lawn Scarifier has a 163cc Briggs & Stratton engine which is a very easy starter.

This engine drives 22 carbon steel blades to pull out established moss and debris. The blades have a swing tip design to limit serious damage should they hit something solid.

The depth at which it works is adjustable and the working width is 38cm.

It has a 40-litre debris collector and weighs 46kg.

The price is £699 and we deliver it free within two to three working days with a five-year warranty.

Professional gardeners may well consider this is the machine for their requirements.

The Efco AG50-H60 Professional Petrol Lawn-Scarifier is at home on large areas and sports pitches and is driven by a 163cc Honda engine designed to be easy to start with automatic decompression.

It is based on free-swinging steel blades mounted on large ball bearings and has a 50cm working width.

A reinforced steel deck gives it great strength and resilience.

It costs £949 compared with the recommended price of £1129 and is delivered free of charge the next working day with a three-year warranty.

This machine is a maker in the USA with a reputation for making brilliant machines for clearing debris from large areas.

The Billy Goat CR550HC Compact Petrol Scarifier (Honda GC Engine) has a 160cc engine and a 51cm working width so it can be used on really large gardens.

It has working depths from 1.2cm to 1.9cm and has flail-reel free swinging blades and is built on a very solid chassis.

A bail arm is used to engage the blades as a safety measure and this machine can be converted to a verticutter.

This top quality machine costs £1299 compared with the recommended price of £1319. We deliver it for free within two to three working days and it has a one-year warranty.

And finally, a piece of kit attached to a lawn tractor for clearing the rubbish from a really large area.

The Agri-Fab 40″ Spring-Tine Dethatcher (45-0294) has 20sprung tines to tease out moss and other debris from the surface to let nutrients and moisture get to the roots and allow vigorous growth.

The width means you can cover large areas quickly and it is easily attached to virtually any make of garden tractor.

It has a ballast tray which will take 31.5kg so you can make the tines penetrate a little deeper if needed. It sits on a pair of pneumatic tyres so it can handle all types of ground.

The price is £119, £20 less than the recommended price and we deliver it free of charge within seven days with a three-year warranty.

‘We have only used it once since receiving it this week, but we’re very impressed with it. We used 6 house bricks to weigh it down, which worked really well. It brought out lots of thatch and moss but the lawn looked great once we ran over it with the leaf collector attachment. Would definitely recommend this product.’

That’s the view of a recent customer. Other opinions can be found here.

These are just ten scarifiers and aerators from our pages, others can be seen here.

It really is worthwhile taking time to improve the health of the lawn at this time of year before the Spring growth begins in earnest and then you will have a healthy lawn all year.

And it does pay to scarify regularly during summer months – every six weeks for this process is recommended by professional gardeners.

An excellent prompt service, A telephone conversation with the customer support team provided the information I needed for the purchase of an Einhell petrol scarifier.  The machine is excellent value for money and does its job better than expected of a small value machine. Highly recommended product and supplier.’ S James (TRUSTPILOT)
