OK. So you’ve got a big lawn. You could fit The Emirates stadium in it and still have room for a garden party to rival our good Queen Liz’s summer bash and Robbie William’s ego. Or perhaps you have a large but not massive lawn, not enormous but just out of the range of the average walk-behind lawn mower – and you know this because you are slightly out of breath at the end of mowing and you realise you started at 3.00 and it’s now getting dark.
So. You are definitely in the market for a new, sparkling, supersonic ride-on mower. What could be simpler or more exciting?
Yesterday’s, typically straightforward and sharp blog by my good chum and top sommelier’s friend Mr Dick Roberts offered you invaluable information on a couple of excellent AL-KO tractors, the Al-Ko T16-92HD Twin-Cylinder Lawn Tractor and the AL-KO T16-102HD Twin-Cylinder Lawn Tractor
But how do you know if they are for you? Well, in his blog, Dick was very clear on what size lawn these tractors are ideal for but perhaps a more all encompassing guide would be useful.
There are, as always a number of factors affecting your purchase of a ride-on mower, just as there are when buying a walk-behind mower. What drive system do you need? How powerful do you need it to be? Does it have a cup-holder big enough for your special portable Star Wars drinks cup one of the kids gave you for Christmas?
However, the main criteria is nearly always the size of your lawn or grounds. Perhaps you have a meadow to cut as well as a lawn, perhaps you have multiple lawns. This is all worth bearing in mind when you purchase a ride-on mower.
If you live in a small or even medium urban property with an average sized lawn, it is unlikely you would want to buy a ride-on mower unless you were planing on pimping it and racing it for a hobby ( believe me, it does happen) but if your lawn is very roughly, between 500 and 2000 m2 or above, you may well decide you need a ride-on or lawn tractor.
If you would like to know more about ride-on mowers, lawn or estate tractors and the ins and outs of power, grass collection etc, have a good look at these pages on our knowledge base MowHow where there are a number of articles that will help you,
Ultimately though, the size of the ride-on’s cutting deck is probably the most important factor.
So here, taken from one of our may MowHow articles, is a very brief guide to the size of cutting deck you might need.
Cutting width Approx’ Lawn Size
- 60-70cm 500-2000 m2
- 70-80cm 1000-4000 m2
- 80- 90cm 2000-6000 m2
- 90-100cm 3000-8000 m2
- 100- 110cm 4000-10,000 m2
- 110-120cm 6000-15,000+ m2
- 120-130cm 8000-20,000+ m2
