So says the old piece of folk lore which, like many other ancient country sayings, is all too true as the wind settles round in the east and north and looks set to stay there for several days to come.

But with the first snows of winter in the north of England and many parts of Scotland, time for us all to take precautions to make sure we’re not blocked in at home, much though that sounds a tempting prospect.
