September Song – September Deals

My timely title title today, September Song, refers to a famous and beautiful, wistful and haunting balled, written by the great Kurt Weill, made famous and covered by such vocal royalty as Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Ella Fitzgerald, not to mention the sublime Lotte Lenya, wife of Bertolt Brecht and rather unfairly, best known to a large part of a modern audience as bond villain Rosa Klebb.

Fun Facts: September, as if you didn’t know, is named after the Roman word for seven, ‘Septem’, as it was the seventh month in the Roman calendar, even though it is now the ninth month, which is not at all confusing.

Corn Doll: Cheaper than a Barbie but a bit itchier

More fun facts: Late September was the traditional harvesting period in medieval England, a time of celebration and the creation of corn dolls which revered and lauded the corn goddess. September is also the month in which Michaelmas was and is celebrated.

Dumb Facts: It is the only month to come after August but before October.

The lovely September Song tells of the days growing short as we reach the Autumn months and, I heard it on the radio just the other day and, I have to say with a twinge of sadness, it seems very apposite as the heady days of sea, sand, sunshine and sitting in the garden with a bottle of Anderson’s Ample Amber Ale do seem to be heading towards that last grey and grisly furlong for another year (Sigh).

However, we do have the last gasp of Summer to go and, as I’m sure you know as well as I, we sometimes end with a glorious blast of sunshine in September…not looking good just now though.

But let us not be glum my friends, let us look to the positive things September brings. The last night of the proms, for a start, who could resist the distant strains of Pomp and Circumstance drifting over the rooftops of London as the sun goes down on the Empire yet again?

Plus, all the teenagers go back to school so they won’t be hanging around in market squares looking at their mobile phones or riding round on scooters trying to snaffle yours. There are hosts of meteor showers in September, if only we could see them for the clouds and let’s not forget, today the 5th, is National Cheese Pizza day in the US. That’s got to be a cheery thing if you’re favourite TV show is Man V Food or some nonsense about Mutant Ninja Turtles living in a sewer.
