Ground-breaking technology which revolutionises lawn mowing – here are ten of the latest machines

Everyone remembers their first car. Mine was a Ford Anglia and was a wonderful car until I hit a holly tree. I suspect I’m not alone in crashing the first car.

But how about the first lawnmower. The one I used to cut my parent’s lawn was the type you pushed along and the drive from the wheels propelled the cutter blades windmill fashion.

It was heavy and the cut was terrible – you had to go back and go over it again every two yards and it took forever to trim just a small lawn.

Then the first mower with a petrol engine arrived to drive the cutter blade.

It was a devil to fire up and belched blue smoke, but it was an amazing step forward.

So what of the future? Here are ten mowers from our pages which have broken new ground in the last few years or are new for this year.

Battery power is becoming more popular and the days when it took most of a Saturday afternoon to trim a tiny patch of grass are now long gone.

And for an even easier life, robotic mowers can now do it all for you.

The first new mower is a cordless model which we helped to develop. And once you have bought this with the battery and charger you can then you can buy other machinery in the range at a bargain price as the same battery fits them all.

The Redback E137CQ-2Ah Cordless Lawnmower has a 40V battery with a 2Ah cell which can charge in just 70 minutes.

This is a hand-propelled mower easy to work round flower beds and bushes with a 37cm cutting width so it can happily tackle a lawn of about 400m2.

It has five cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm selected with a single lever and a 40-litre grass box and has slightly larger rear wheels to make it easy to manoeuvre.

The handlebar, which folds down for easy storage, has a dial to show how much charge remains in the battery.

It is delivered free the next working day and has a three-year warranty and costs £249, almost £100 less than the recommended price.

The next one is from one of Britain’s favourite manufacturers, and is the Mountfield Princess 38Li Cordless 4-Wheel Rear-Roller Lawnmower.

This one has two 2Ah 48V Lithium-ion batteries which can cover 300m2 in a single charge.

And it has a rear roller so it leaves a striped finish, a look becoming more popular.

It has a 38cm cutting width and six cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm and has higher rear wheels to make it easy to mow close to the edges of flower beds and paths.

The grass box holds 40 litres and you can see what previous customers think of the mower by clicking here.

The mower costs £379, £40 off the recommended price and it has a two-year warranty with free next working day delivery.

Einhell is another well-known German manufacturer of garden equipment and here is their cordless mower, the GE-CM 43LI Power X-Change Cordless Lawnmower.

This one has an 18V, 4Ah, lithium-ion battery which charges to capacity in 90 minutes.

With its 43cm cutting width it is suitable for lawns around 500m2 and has six cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm.

It has a 63 litre grass box which has an indicator to show when it is full and you can mulch the clippings if you prefer and when conditions allow. It weighs just 16.5kg.

It also has a thick rubberised shell to resist impact should you bump into a tree or drop it.

Two batteries and two chargers are included in the price and these will work with other machinery in the Power X-Change range.

It costs £359, £40 less than the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a two-year warranty.

The next one has a wide cutting width and can handle larger areas – even up to 1000m2.

The Cobra MX46S40V Self-Propelled Cordless Lawnmower is from a British brand and has been designed to cope with British conditions.

It has three ways of dealing with the cut grass, either collecting it in the 60-litre grass box, discharging to the side or mulching.

It has two 40V batteries which are easily checked for charge levels and is an easy machine to use thanks to self-propulsion. It also has the power to tackle all sorts or grass including the rougher areas.

The price is £459, £30 off the recommended price and we deliver it free the next working day with a two-year warranty.

Now one suitable for larger areas and the most powerful rechargeable lawnmower on the market.

With a 52cm cutting width, the EGO LM2102E-SP Power+ Self-Propelled Cordless Lawnmower has a 7.5Ah, 56V lithium-ion battery with a running time of 45 minutes and a very fast charging time of 30 minutes.

It has six cutting heights form 25mm to 95mm and you can also discharge cut grass to the side and mulch it. The grass box holds 70 litres.

It also has a variable-speed drive so you set the pace at which you mow.

The cutting deck is made from polypropylene so there is no worry about rusting and it keeps the weight down.

It even has headlights at the front so you can see if you want to mow in the murk.

It costs £699, £30 off the recommended price, has a five-year warranty and we deliver it free the next working day.

Now another from Cobra, this one a rear-roller mower to leave a striped finish to the lawn.

The Cobra RM4140V Cordless Rear-Roller Lawnmower has a 40V, 4Ah battery which will run for 30 minutes on a 90-minute charge.

It has a cutting width of 41cm and six cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm and being a rear-roller mower it can close to lawn edges without the risk of it toppling into the borders and is suitable for smaller lawns.

This one has a steel cutter deck to give it rigidity and it has a 50-litre grass box.

It is priced at £359.99, £25 off the recommended price and has a two-year warranty with free delivery the next working day.

Now a mower new for this year from Mountfield which ticks loads of boxes.

The Mountfield S46R-PD LI Cordless Power-Driven Rear-Roller Lawnmower has an 80V battery and a steel cutter deck.

And it is also self-propelled with a 46cm cutting deck making it capable of tackling rougher areas and sloping lawns and is suitable for areas around 1000m2.

The full-width rear roller means you can cut right up to the edges of flower beds and paths leaving a striped finish.

It has five cutting heights from 20mm to 70mm and a 55-litre grass box and is fitted with a grass comb for a neater finish and has a skid plate so it won’t scalp the lawn.

It costs £649, £50 off the recommended price and we deliver it the next working day with a two-year warranty.

Now, another new one for this year, this from Stiga, a Swedish company.

The Stiga Multiclip 47AE Cordless Lawnmower has an extra-powerful 80V, 40Ah, battery which will deliver the same power as a petrol engine but with no unpleasant fumes or noise and will be easier and lighter to use – it weighs just 25kg.

With a cutting width of 45cm it can handle areas up to 1000m2 and has five working heights from 31mm to 80mm.

This is a mower which mulches the clippings and is a very light and easy machine to use especially on rougher areas.

The price is £529, £20 off the recommended price and we deliver it free the next working day. It has a two-year warranty.

And finally, a couple of robotic mowers which make traditional grass cutting a thing of the past – well almost.

For once you have pegged out a perimeter wire and established a base station with a mains feed the robot will then cut the lawn to the height you want, will return to its station when it needs re-charging and won’t demand a beer or cup of tea every few minutes.

These two are from Robomow, a leading manufacturer from Israel.

The first one is new for this year and made with small lawns in mind.

The Robomow RX12U Automatic Robotic Lawn Mower has a floating cutter deck so it won’t scalp the lawn and has an energy-saving mode to save power and keep the noise down.

Yet it is powerful enough to deal with slopes up to 15 degrees and with its super-sharp blade will mulch the clippings.

It has four cutting heights from 15mm to 45mm with a dial at the side of the mower to make setting the height easy. The working width is 18cm and it is delivered free with 70 metres of perimeter wire and 100 pegs to fix it down.

It costs £499, £100 off the recommended price and has a two-year warranty.

And this one is recommended for lawns around 500m2 and is fitted with a powerful motor which can tackle slopes up to 36 degrees and thick grass.

The Robomow RC304U Automatic Robotic Lawn Mower has a 26V battery and a heavy steel blade and the latest technology lets you send it commands from your mobile phone.

It has cutting heights from 15mm to 60mm and a built-in pin code security feature makes stealing it pointless. It will also cut out if tilted or lifted, a useful safety device.

It can also be programmed to handle several lawned areas.

The price is £999, £200 off the recommended price and it has a three-year warranty and free next working day delivery.
