Machines just used for grass cutting in the summer months will now find they are put to other tasks through the autumn and winter, carting firewood, clearing leaves, scarifying and aerating lawns for instance.
So here are ten of our top ride-ons and lawn tractors for September. And remember if you can’t find the machine for you here there are lots more on our site on these pages.
First is the Lawnflite 2-in-1 Ride-On Mower, new and exclusive to us for this year.
With a comparatively narrow cutting width – 60cm – it can handle narrow garden gates and is designed for lawns around 2000m2.
Power is from a Briggs & Stratton 190cc engine which is started with a key and it has a six-speed transmission where you can change gears on the move.
It mulches the clippings before letting them fall back to the lawn where they decompose and become a useful fertiliser. For other areas the grass is discharged to the side.
Cutting heights are from 38mm to 95mm.
This easy-to-drive machine costs £1149, £250 off the recommended retail price and it has a two-year warranty.
Delivery is free and between two and three working days.
This one is from the same stable and has a slightly larger wider cutting width.
The Lawnflite 76-RDE Mini Rider has a 420cc MTD engine and a 150-litre grass box but you can buy a mulch plug if you prefer to deal with the clippings this way.
It has six forward and six reverse gears, which are shifted on the move, and a very tight turning circle. There are five cutting heights from 38mm to 95mm.
This one costs £1349, £200 below the recommended price and has a two-year warranty. Delivery is between two and three working days and the option of Saturday delivery is available.
This next one is another new and exclusive for this summer and has proved very popular.
From a leading USA garden machinery manufacturer, the MTD 2-in-1 Combi Lawn Tractor has a 420cc Thor engine and a 96cm cutting deck making it suitable for slightly larger lawns.
The cutting deck pivots and has small wheels to follow the contours of the lawn closely. This means that on uneven areas the turf will not be scalped.
Cuttings are either mulched of discharged to the side where finish is not so important.
It has a very tight turning radius and wide tyres to give good grip when it gets wet.
Also with this machine there are special offers on a range of other equipment you may find useful, like garden trailers and fertiliser spreaders.
It costs £1299 and has a two-year warranty. Free delivery is within two to three working days.
The MTD Direct-Collect Lawn Tractor is a great one for British weather as it is an excellent collector of clippings even when wet.
Under the cutting deck are two blades which create powerful air currents which blast the clippings into the collecting box and eliminate blockages. This box holds 240 litres.
Another handy feature is that the grass box can be emptied without leaving the driver’s seat.
This has a 420cc MTD engine developing 14hp and also has a 3.8litre fuel tank to keep you mowing longer.
The cutting deck is 92cm wide and can be detached without seeking out the tool box.
Anti-scalp wheels protect the surface of lawns and a pivoting front axle gives a smooth ride. It has five cutting heights and seven gears and a mulch plug and a rear grass deflector for use when cutting long grass are available.
It costs £1599, £300 below the recommended price, has a two-year warranty and is delivered free within two to three working days with a Saturday delivery option available.
The Mountfield 1530H Lawn Tractor has an 84cm cutting width and twin cutting blades to give a great finish to the lawn and excellent grass collection.
It is fitted with a 452 Mountfield engine and hydrostatic transmission so it drives much like an automatic car.
The grass box can hold 250 litres and cutting heights are from 25mm to 80mm. Heavy tyres give excellent grip when it gets wet and twin headlights let you keep working when it gets murky.
When you finish work just attach a garden hose to the cutting deck to wash it clean.
You can buy a mulch plug and grass deflector as optional extras.
The price is £1899, £200 off the recommended price and there is a five-year warranty. Normal delivery is within two to three working days.
Now a top machine from a German garden machinery company. And this one has a free garden trailer in the price.
The Al-Ko T16-92HD Special Edition Lawn Tractor is aimed at lawns up to 6000m2 and is fitted with a twin cylinder Briggs & Stratton engine.
This one has a HI-Lift blade designed to force wet grass in to the 220-litre collector which can be emptied from the driver’s seat.
The hydrostatic transmission means it is very easy to drive in restricted spaces and around the edges of flower beds and paths.
There are six cutting heights from 30mm to 90mm and the cutting width is 92cm.
Large diameter tyres give excellent grip and anti-scalp wheels on the cutting deck follow the contours of the lawn without scalping it. The deck also has a fitting so you can attach a garden hose to clean it out after use.
The free trailer makes this a very attractive package, but this is only available while stocks last.
The tractor costs £2099, £500 off the listed price and as well as the free trailer there is also a free tow hitch. Delivery is free within two to three working days and there is a five-year manufacture’s warranty from Al-Ko.
From a major European manufacturer based in Italy, the Oleo-Mac OM95-16KH Garden Tractor has a newly-redesigned cutting deck, 95cm in width, which gives a very even cut.
There are seven cutting heights for 30mm to 90mm and twin blades to produce a powerful air current to help with grass collection. And you can also mulch clippings if you prefer.
The grass box holds 310 litres and an adjustable seat and comprehensive dashboard display and it is fitted with a strong bumper and tow hitch, to make it a year-round garden workhorse.
Powering it along is a 452cc engine from Emak.
It costs £2499 which is £500 off the recommended price and is delivered free of charge within three to five working days. There is a five-year warranty from Emak.
This next one from Simplicity, a leading manufacturer in the States, is just about unique as it leaves a striped finish to the lawn.
The Simplicity Regent XL/SLT200 Garden Tractor (with Striping Roller) is made for larger gardens as it has a 117cm cutting width and is powered by a 724cc Briggs & Stratton twin-cylinder engine.
This machine mulches the clippings but leaves a perfectly-striped finish thanks to the roller on the cutting deck.
You can also use it as a side-discharge tractor when cutting areas where a neat finish is not so important.
It is really comfortable to drive with a padded seat, cruise control and even a cup holder.
Another new for 2016, it costs £2799, a huge reduction on the recommended price of £3149 and that includes the mulching kit.

Now, from Mountfield, a powerful garden tractor for large gardens.

There are seven cutting heights from 30mm to 90mm and a grass box which holds 320 litres. An alarm sounds telling you when it needs emptying, but you can also mulch the clippings when conditions allow.
This is a very comfortable tractor with an adjustable, high-back seat so you can cut large areas in one session.
It costs £3999, £300 off the recommended price and is has a five-year warranty.
We deliver it free within two to three working days but if you order by 3pm Friday you can be cutting grass the following day for an extra fee.
And finally, a mower for people who have really large gardens and one which is easy to drive close to trees and other obstacles. And it’s at a very keen price.
Simplicity Contender SZT550 Commercial Zero-Turn Ride-On Mower (Special Offer) is steered by a pair of levers and can turn on its own length with power in abundance from a 724 Briggs & Stratton v-twin engine designed for a long demanding life. This makes cutting quicker.
This has a 132cm cutting deck – one of the widest available – fitted with wheels to let the machine follow closely the contours of the ground without scalping it.
A mulch plug is supplied but the mower can also handle huge areas of longer grass, discharging the clippings into neat rows.
There are 12 cutting heights selected with a foot pedal and the whole machine is very comfortable to drive with a high-back seat and arm rests as well as cruise control.
There is also a steel front bumper.
This one costs £4499 compared with the recommended price of £6999 and is delivered free within four to six days.
