Hints & Tips
Longest day of the year tomorrow. Warm weather, barbecues and perfectly-striped lawns.
Well yes, that’s what the novelists would have us believe but the reality is anything but a heatwave with rain by the bucket load. So the barbecue stays in its winter hut is still packed away from last year’s holiday.
But at least we can still have the archetypical British lawn, an essential for an English summer garden even if we can’t have the sun to go with it.
To get stripes you need a mower with a rear roller and there is one manufacturer which has been manufacturing these machines for decades.
Allett is a British company and produces the machines you see on major cricket and tennis clubs as well as village bowling greens, gently puttering along and leaving an exceptionally short finish, and above all, stripes.
Exactly how neatly parallel the stripes are is unfortunately up to the person using the mowers.
They make machines suitable for every size of lawn from small cottage gardens to Wimbledon and the Allett Classic 14L Petrol Cylinder Lawn Mower suitable for the smaller cottage garden.
Allett mowers work by trapping blades of grass between revolving blades and a sharp knife at the base of the machine giving a much neater finish than the conventional rotary mower.
The 87cc engine drives both the blades and the rear roller and it has a cutting width of 14in – 35cm.
Cutting heights are 6mm, 9mm, 13mm, 18mm, 25mm and 32mm, much shorter than most conventional mowers. The grass box holds 32 litres.
This mower has the advantage in that is can easily be converted to a scarifier with a scarifying cartridge and this can be bought for an extra £130.
This mower costs £619, £50 less than the recommended price and has a one year warranty. We deliver it free the next working day.
The Allett Classic 17L Petrol Cylinder Lawn Mower costs £725 and is a similar mower but with a wider 43cm – 17in – cutting width.
The Allett Kensington 14K Petrol Cylinder Lawn Mower is one often used by greenkeepers at golf clubs and groundsmen at cricket and bowling clubs.
It has a 98cc Kawasaki engine to drive it along and has infinite cutting heights from 6mm to 32mm. The cutting width is 35cm – 14 in, but it has a big brother with a wider, 20in cutting width.
Kensington mowers have split, steel rear rollers with a differential and a front roller as well and an adjustable rake behind the front roller to clear debris.
It has a six-blade cylinder but a 10-blade version is also available as an optional extra.
The grass box holds 52 litres and you can also buy a scarifier which easily fits on to the mower to extend it use.
It costs £975, over £70 off the recommended price, is delivered free the next working day and has a two-year warranty.
You may well have seen a mower like this gliding up and down the elegant lawns of grand country houses.
Allett Buckingham 20H Petrol Cylinder Lawn Mower has two rollers, one at the front and one behind the cutting mechanism and has a 196cc engine.
The one at the back is in two sections and covered in bonded, textured rubber and the front one is zinc plated.
This one also has a front adjustable rake to give neater finish and cutting heights right down to 5mm. The grass box holds 84 litres.
Allett Buckingham mowers can be fitted with Autosteer trailing seats which make cutting larger areas much more comfortable. These seats follow precisely the mower in front and with a person on the seat provide an even flatter, striped finish.
These mowers are very easy start and steer so that even an amateur can achieve a professional finish.
This one costs £3159, well over £300 off the recommended price and has a two year warranty. We deliver it free the next working day.
