Lawns love summers like this, a fair bit of rain and plenty of sun to keep them growing. And it is at this time of year we want them looking their best for summer parties and barbecues.
If you are fortunate enough to have a really big lawn, you will need a lawn tractor to save on mowing time if you are not to spend every waking hour and dry day behind a conventional lawnmower.

So first on our list is the Lawnflite RF125 Lawn & Garden Tractor, a side-discharge mower suitable for paddocks and larger areas, but which can also collect clippings or mulch them with a couple of extra bits of kit.
The cutting width is 96cm and it can easily nip round difficult shapes with its tight turning circle.
A Briggs & Stratton engine provides plenty of ‘oomph’ and it is easily controlled as it has transmatic transmission.
Cutting heights are from 30mm to 95mm and, with its pivoting front axle, it is well equipped to handle undulating ground. There are also small wheels on the cutting deck to help it follow the lawn’s contours.

This one has a single blade shaped to increase the airflow under the cutting and this, as well as a turbo fan, blasts the clippings into a large grass collector. This means that even when it’s wet it is a very efficient collector of wet damp grass.
The cutting deck is offset on the left so that you can cut right up to the edges of flower borders and paths.
The speed of is controlled by the accelerator pedal, much like an automatic car for ease of control and versatility.
And again it has a free steel tipping trailer which can take a load of 340kg, more than adequate for carting soils, fertilizers, wood for the fire and the like.

Now a best seller from one of Britain’s favourite brands.
The Mountfield 1530H Lawn Tractor has an 84cm cutting width and twin blades for a great finish to any lawn.
It has hydrostatic drive and a 452cc engine fed by an extra-large six litre fuel tank.
The twin blades create a very strong airflow which makes this machine another excellent collector of wet grass. There are seven cutting heights from 25mm to 80mm.
It is a very comfortable tractor to drive with a padded sprung seat and moulded steering wheel.
The cutting width is 84cm wide and the deck is easily washed at the end of each session – just attach a garden hose to a special nozzle and run the blades.
A mulch plug worth £105 and a tow bar worth £63 are supplied free and you also receive a free front bumper – those jumping trees can be a terrible nuisance.

Another from Lawnflite, and this one is a serious machine made for larger gardens.
The 903 RT Lawn Tractor has a 105cm wide cutting deck and is great at collecting wet grass.
With a 500cc Briggs & Stratton engine and Transmatic Drive it is both powerful and easy to use, an ideal machine for cutting large areas of lawn and rougher grassed areas.

The Al-Ko T16-92HD Special Edition Lawn Tractor is ideal for lawns up to 8000m2 and is powered by a Briggs & Stratton twin cylinder 479cc engine.
But it also has an aerodynamic Hi-Life blade to power wet grass into the 220 litre grass box. And this box can be emptied from the driver’s seat.

The Murray EMT2242RDF Garden Tractor, which comes with a tow bar, has a Briggs & Stratton 22hp twin cylinder engine which starts very easily and has hydrostatic transmission.
And with a turning circle of just 36cm it is ideal for gardens with trees and other obstacles.
It has four anti-scalp wheels on the cutting deck to closely follow the contours of the lawn and minimise scalping and an added features is that you can reverse the tractor with the blades engaged, useful for the edges of rougher areas.
The cutting width is 107cm making it suitable for areas up to 12,000m2.

The Simplicity Regent XL/SLT200 Garden Tractor has a 117cm cutting width making it suitable for really large areas with its 117cm cutting widthand 724cc Briggs & Stratton twin cylinder engine.
This is a side-discharge garden tractor, ideal for cutting larger meadows and orchards but there is an optional mulching kit and triple-bagging system for more formal lawns.
The cutting deck is free-floating and can easily be removed for other gardening tasks without reaching for the tool box.

This next one is from a leading Italian garden machinery company and is made for larger areas.
The Oleo-Mac OM125-23KH Garden Tractor with Electronic Grassbag Emptying has a massive 125cm cutting deck and a 310-litre grass box which can be emptied at the touch of a button, a facility which most other lawn tractors don’t offer.
A twin-cylinder Briggs & Stratton 724cc engine drives it along and this one can be set to either mulch, collect or discharge clippings to the rear.
Transmission is hydrostatic and it has been designed to keep vibrations to a minimum.
It costs£3499, £1500 off the recommended price and has a three year warranty with free delivery within three to five working days.
Now for a different-looking machine with really great manoeuvrability.
The Stiga Park 540 LPX Ride-On Lawnmower (Excluding Deck) can get into the tightest corners but is very easy to steer – the back wheels follow exactly the direction of the front cutting deck – there is no danger that the back end of the mower will hit anything as it passes.
The driver has an unimpeded view of where he or she is heading allowing for a very precise cut.
Driving it is a 500cc Briggs & Stratton engine which has bags of power and wide profile tyres will not scuff the surfaces. It also has a four-wheel drive for excellent grip.
There are five cutting decks available from 95cm to 110cm and all have electronic deck lift except the 95cm unit.
