Hints & Tips
With the huge amounts of rain and milder winter gardens are putting on a very early spurt and if you did not carry out pruning in the autumn, you need to start soon.
Twigs and dead growth on shrubs won’t burn well at this time of the year and really need to be shredded and put on the compost heap and here are a couple of machines to do the trick.
The American-made Earthquake CS6B Petrol Chipper-Shredder will take branches up to 5 cm in diameter and will shred the waste to one twentieth its original volume.
It is designed with a flywheel to drag the debris through and knives to chop it up.
It also has swinging hammers which pulverise softer materials like hedge clippings and leaves.
A 70 litre bag collects the treated debris making it easier to transport to the compost heap.
A Briggs & Stratton engine powers the shredding gear and the direct drive motor reduces vibrations and gives the machine a longer life.
With larger wheels the machine can be easily moved to where it is needed.
It costs £799 and has a two year warranty from the makers. We deliver it free within two to three working days.
The Earthquake CS10 Petrol Chipper-Shredder is an even more powerful machine with a 10 hp Briggs & Stratton engine and is suitable for larger gardens and even professional use.
This one can deal with branches up to 7.5 in in diameter and produces wood chippings you can use on paths and other areas where you want to keep the weeds down.
As with the previous model the branches and other debris are dragged into the machine speeding up the job no end – once you have introduced the branch you can collect the next one, no need to feed it in.
This has a 70 litre collection bag so you won’t leave a mess and can be easily towed around the garden.
An optional vac kit is available to extend the use of this chipper shredder, very useful for when the leaves start falling.
This top machine costs £999 and has a two year warranty. We deliver it free the next working day.
