The ganpinensis – or Soft Caress – subspecies of the Mahonia eurybracteata has won the prestigious Plant of the Year crown at the Royal Horticultural Society's 2013 run of the Chelsea Flower Show.
It took the coveted prize ahead of a shortlist of 20 entrants – and second place was granted to the Lemon Dream variety of Clematis.
Third spot was taken by the Tropaeolum Fruit Salad – and the entire shortlist aimed to recognise the most inspiring new plants.
Soft Caress was praised for its nature as a fascinating new form, characterised by unusual, delicate and fren-like foliage.
Chris Campbell, a partner from Javado – the group behind the winning plant, said it is his company's aim to excite customers with new offerings.
"I spotted the Mahonia last summer and knew at once that this would be a great plant for our garden centres," he commented, adding: "We work very closely with our growers to ensure top-quality plants every time."
